Weekend Family Highlights: Underwater Archaeology, Rainbow Fish, Theater!

Summer is finally here and school is out! There are plenty of fun and family-friendly things to do in and around town, and we’ve rounded them up for you right here. Have a look!

Barnes & Noble at Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host a Rainbow Fish Storytime on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Celebrate this modern classic’s 25th year in print with a reading of this story about a beautiful fish who learns to make friends by sharing his most prized possessions. Activities will follow.

Also on Saturday, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, kids can learn the basics of archaeology including underwater archaeology and some of its unique challenges. Dig It! II Archaeology for Kids will be held at Historic Speedwell (333 Speedwell Avenue, Morristown). Roll up your sleeves and join in a mock underwater dig! Cost is $5 per adult, $4 per senior, $3 per child age 4-16, and free for children under age 4.

Meet the Servants at the Willows on Saturday at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Road, Morris Township). During a hands-on guided tour, learn about the role of the domestic servant at the Foster home, The Willows, during the World War 1 era. Help the maid with household chores and learn how much work it was to keep a proper house. At the end of the tour, help prepare historic foods using the wood-burning cook stove. Tours begin at 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Cost is $6 per adult, $5 per senior, $4 per child age 4-16, $2 per child age 2 and 3, and free for children under age 2.

On Sunday, AbunDance Academy of the Arts will present “Sister Act, AbunDantly!” This theatrical dance performance will feature students and seasoned Broadway artists on the same stage. Inspired by the hit movies “Sister Act” and “Sister Act 2” starring Whoopi Goldberg, this event tells the story of a compassionate and successful Broadway star who returns to her hometown in Brooklyn to inject the arts into every corner of the borough. Performers range in age from 3 to 83, and the show includes a live band and choir. Catch this performance at Kings Theatre (1027 Flatbush Avenue, between Tilden and Duryea, Brooklyn). Tickets are $50 in advance and $65 at the door. They can be purchased online at the website.

Also on Sunday, stop by Montclair Art Museum for Drop-In Studio between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio will be stocked with a range of art materials to explore with a seasoned MAM studio instructor. This is free for members and included in Museum admission for non-members. Note that this is the last Drop-In Studio until September!
