Weekend Family Fun: Open Cockpit, StoryTime, Crafts, A County Fair and Jurassic Park

Who’s ready for the weekend? There’s plenty of family-friendly fun going on around town, so check out our list!

Barnes & Noble at Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) hosts Nothing Rhymes with Orange Storytime on Saturday at 11:00 AM. We all know nothing rhymes with orange, but how does that make Orange feel? Left out, of course! But when Apple notices how Orange is feeling, the entire English language begins to become a bit more inclusive. Activities to follow.

Montclair Art Museum

On Saturday, Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) will host their monthly Family Art Adventure from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Explore and discuss artwork and participate in a hands-on project in the studio. This activity is for children ages 6-12 and their adult companions. Reservations are not required. Cost is $18 per family for non-members and $6 per family for members.

The Aviation Hall of Fame of New Jersey (400 Fred Wehran Drive, Teterboro) will host an Open Cockpit Weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The display includes a variety of aircraft. Get an up-close look at these planes, helicopters, and more. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for children and seniors. Access to the museum is included.

Also on Saturday, Cooper Gristmill (65 CR-513, Chester Township) will host Lace Creations from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Watch the nimble fingers of the Lost Art Lacers of North Jersey as they perform the centuries-old arts of bobbin lace-making and tatting, then try your hand at bobbin lacing. Families are invited to Historic Speedwell (333 Speedwell Avenue, Morristown) for Homemade Watercolors on Saturday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Be a scientist and an artist by using natural ingredients to create paints. Cost is $7 per adult, $6 per senior, $5 per child age 4-16, and free for children under age 4. Also on Saturday, Michaels of Clifton (348 Route 3 West, Riverfront Center, Clifton) will host a Kids Club Pom-Pom & Gem Art workshop. Children ages 3 and up can make a quick project. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. Parent or guardian must remain on premises. Cost is $2 and includes supplies. (http://www.michaels.com/classes )

On Sunday, Montclair Film Center will present an outdoor screening of Jurassic Park on Church Street (Montclair). Pre-movie entertainment will begin around 7:00 PM and will feature performances by School of Rock and a special guest from Field Station Dinosaurs. The movie will begin around 8:00 PM. The Passaic County Fair will be held this weekend at Garret Mountain Reservation (1 Mountain Avenue, Woodland Park). The fair will be open from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Friday, and 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM Saturday and Sunday. There will be rides, fireworks, games, food, beer/wine garden, chess tournament, and health screenings.
