New Jersey Comic Expo returns to Edison for its third straight year. On November 18 and 19, comic and pop culture fans can expect to see everything they love at the New Jersey Convention & Exposition Center. This event boasts a number of talented writers, artists, illustrators, and creators showcasing their work. In addition to vendors and exhibitors, attendees can meet and greet some of their favorite celebrities and attend guest signings.
NJCE offers everything that fans of comic conventions want without the overwhelming nature of large shows like New York Comic Con. The smaller setting means fans can meet and interact with the comic creators much more easily.
Recently announced guests include co-writer Keith Giffen and artist Kevin Maguire who will participate in a rare panel appearance spotlighting their work on the Justice League franchise. With the new Justice League movie opening right before NJCE, it’s perfect timing for longtime fans and the newly-initiated alike.
For those interested in a behind-the-scenes look at comics, there’s plenty of programming available at NJCE. Dynamite Entertainment will present a panel discussing how a comic comes together. Another panel, “Storytelling on the Page,” will feature multiple artists illustrating the same comic script in real time, showing how an artist’s vision impacts a comic.
Other panels planned for the show cover a range of topics including how real-world issues impact comics, the horror comic genre, and more. A panel focusing on some of Dynamite’s top writers will include Gail Simone, NJCE’s first-ever Guest of Honor. Apex Comics Group and Papercutz, two more publishers, will be hosting panels as well, including one on Sunday morning on the topic of kids’ comics.
NJCE has always had an area specifically geared toward children and this year takes that concept and builds on it. The Liberty Science Center Pavilion will feature an assortment of hands-on activities, demonstrations, and shows. Activities focus on electricity, liquid nitrogen, the strength of air, the science of smell memory, and more, all with comic-related themes.
Martha Donato, president of MAD Event Management, the masterminds behind NJCE, said, “The partnership with Liberty Science Center is a relationship we hope to continue for years to come. With a planetarium, Star Lab, and drone exhibition, we know the Liberty Science Center area will be fun for all ages. We love to see the look on kids’ faces when they get to experience something new, fun, and simultaneously educational.”
Cosplay fans will also be happy to know that NJCE draws a big cosplay audience. Saturday evening’s cosplay contest is always a hit and those who are just getting into the cosplay scene will enjoy panels such as Cosplay 101 and another focused on armor making, both to be held on Sunday. The show is sponsored in part by sewing and embroidery machine manufacturer Bernina and the world’s premier cosplay magazine, Cosplay Culture, making the show a wonderful event for cosplayers.
