Sensory Delights with Coffee and Art, at Local Coffee Montclair

At Local Coffee Montclair in Watchung Plaza, coffee and art have been sharing a space for many months.

As patrons enjoy their freshly brewed lattes and cappucinnos currently, they will also be taking in the whimsical creations of local artist Darin Wacs, in the form of three vivid and cheerful sculpture lights. five sculptures and four silk screen prints

The fixtures, dubbed Critters, involved quite a production, and was no mean feat for Wacs, who said they “were fabricated in Northern California out of laser cut steel and product painted.”

“I made them specifically with the space over the coffee bar at Local in mind..they are meant to draw in the patrons and surprise them with a new whimsical, colorful, dynamic element.” said Wacs, whose favorite artists include Calder, Matisse, Miro, Picasso.

Five of her mini metal sculptures are also displayed at the cafe, along with four of Wacs’ silk screen prints.

Said Robert Genovese, who, with his wife Adele, owns Local: “We developed the artist residency at Local to allow local Artists a design appropriate space to share their work with the community.”

Genovese said Local will promote the work of artists through digital and analog channels, with the analog involving posting art pieces in the shop as well as allowing the artists to take over the space “for an event where they can invite friends, family as well as introduce the work to the community who may not be aware of their craft.”

For example, Wacs, who juggles her sometimes-elaborate creations with her job as a designer and as a mother of two teenage boys, will be holding an event to showcase her light fixtures at the Local on Thursday, Nov. 30, from 6-8pm (all are welcome!).

Digital channels include an original artist interview posted the Local Coffee blog and various social media posts shared throughout the month.
