Nutcracker Day! Family-Friendly Events This December At Montclair Library

Nutcracker Day

This Friday, December 8 is Nutcracker Day at Montclair Public Library.

“Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite is a wonderful holiday tradition. We are celebrating that tradition and our community with a wide array of activities, including two screenings of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker,” says Library Director Peter Coyl. This 100-minute, Lincoln Center version of the classic features 275 New York City Ballet dancers, including Justin Peck and Megan Fairchild.

Events include:

11:00am Nutcracker Day Dress-up Storytime
Children and their adults will enjoy a story, make a costume and do a little dance.

3:30pm Kid Friendly Screening of The Nutcracker
This first screening of The Nutcracker will be a kid-friendly show with crafts and treats.

5pm Ballerina Talk & Demonstration
A group of young ballerinas will come to talk about performing The Nutcracker Suite and demonstrate some of the dances. No registration required.

6pm Classical Concert & Screening of The Nutcracker
Classical concert featuring Russian and German selections followed by the final screening of The Nutcracker at 7pm

I Am Jazz Community Book Reading
Support transgender youth by joining the Youth Services Staff for the National I Am Jazz School and Community Reading Day on December 7. Parents, educators and community members across the country will come together in support of transgender and non-binary youth by reading Jazz Jenning’s 2014 autobiographical picture book, I Am Jazz.

29th Annual Kwanzaa Celebration
Please join us for the Library’s 29th year celebrating Kwanzaa! We are excited to welcome back Mama Yaa, a steward of African Yoruba culture, who will kick off the event with a traditional libation ceremony, a lighting of the seven candles of Kwanzaa, and a special celebration of Ghanaian culture. We will enjoy African dancing and drumming as performed by Pyramyd Dance Company and face-painting for children by Chet Wellborn. Delicious samples of healthy food cuisine will be served by Chef Abraham of Abe Foods.
