Homeschooling Open House

Check out the Library’s monthly Homeschooling open house and make friends with other families. Youth Services Librarian, Enola Romano, displays our collection of parenting books about homeschooling. “A Wrinkle in Time” Book Club for Kids

Enjoy a 3-part monthly book club about Madeleine L’Engle’s classic book A Wrinkle in Time in anticipation of the upcoming film! We’ll discuss its metaphors, characters, plot, connections and lessons. After the first two classes we’ll meet at a theater (TBD) and watch the movie.* Then we will meet again on March 16 to discuss the book vs. the movie. Book club dates are January 5, February 9 and March 16, 5pm-6pm. Kids can pick up books at the 3rd floor Children’s upon registering. Discussions will be led by Ms. O’Connor, Reading Specialist from StarlightStudentStage.com, who has been hosting book-clubs and tutoring in Montclair for 17 years. Beginning Chess for Kids with Jaron Bernard

Enjoy an introduction to chess for kids with Jaron Bernard. Chess requires concentration and planning, and can improve academic skills. In this six-week program, kids will be taught moves, strategies, notation, etiquette and sportsmanship. Ample time will be allowed for free play at the end of each class. Jaron Bernard is president of the Montclair High School Chess Club and a veteran of over 100 tournaments. Rated in the top 5% of tournament players in the US, he has had many successes including winning one of two Best Game prizes at the 2017 New Jersey Open. Jaron has taught in groups and one-on-one settings with Chess for Life, Mathnasium, and assisted Sean Finn at Montclair Learning Center. He currently studies with International Grandmaster and NJ State Champion Mackenzie Molner.

Game On: Wii & Board Games

Are ‘wii board’ yet? Come enjoy many games that are a lot of fun and offer a little bit of friendly competition. We will provide various Wii games (including but not limited to) Wii Sports Resort, Just Dance, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. In addition, we will also offer various board games such as Don’t Wake Daddy, Creationary, LIFE, Clue, Connect 4, Operation, Twister, Mancala, Chess, and Backgammon to those who prefer to play traditional board games. GAME ON!

Read to Mila: A Therapy Dog Visit

Mila the dog is an avid reader and wants you to read your favorite book to her! Mila is a 3-year-old cocker spaniel and lives with her human family and dog-sister, Phoebe, in Montclair. She loves chasing squirrels, tummy rubs, roasted chicken and playing fetch-the-ball. But her favorite things are cuddles and kids.

“Era Uma Vez, na Biblioteca”: Storytime in Portuguese

“Era Uma Vez, na Biblioteca” (Once Upon a Time, at the Library) welcomes all families to be part of this experience of storytelling in Portuguese. The program will be run in Portuguese, and is oriented towards families with children from newborns to 9-year-olds. The stories will be interwoven with little songs and rhymes, all in Portuguese. The storyteller, Ana Cristina Coura, is an educator with a background in psychology who has taught children in Brazil for many years, and worked as an art educator (for a nonprofit in NYC) for a few years before moving to Montclair with her husband and children.

Celebrate World Read Aloud Day & Harry Potter Book Night

February 1 is World Read Aloud Day (WRAD)! Every year people all around the globe read aloud together and share stories to advocate for literacy as a human right that belongs to all people. This year WRAD and Scholastic are combining forces. Please join us as library staff read favorite passages from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Stop in between 4 and 5 pm and listen for 5 minutes or the entire hour.

TAB Meeting (Teen Advisory Board)

Join us for our January Teen Advisory Board meeting! The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) of the Montclair Public Library meets the first Wednesday of each month, October-May. TAB members receive community service hours for participating. This month we’ll be discussing current programming for January, including our Winter Reading Challenge 2018, planning teen programs for the February and March, and making a craft for part of our upcoming Winter Reading Challenge programming!
