Leading the list of all-star headliners is a giant of Latin music, NEA Jazz Master and 10-time GRAMMY Award-winning pianist, composer and bandleader Eddie Palmieri. For six decades, Latin music’s “most acclaimed living star” (DownBeat), Palmieri has thrilled fans worldwide with his eclectic and inclusive approach to Latin music..
“We are so excited to have the one-and-only Eddie Palmieri join us for the 2018 Montclair Jazz Festival,” said Melissa Walker, Founder & President of JAZZ HOUSE KiDS. “Eddie is quite simply a living legend. He is an electrifying performer who fuses jazz with his Puerto Rican roots into a tour de force that will thrill festival-goers this year!”
Jazz House Kids also announced a performance by the internationally-renowned Trio 3, which heads to the Montclair Jazz Festival days after headlining at this year’s Newport Jazz Festival. A heralded “supergroup,” Trio 3 draws from Montclair’s very own jazz royalty: Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman, and Andrew Cyrille.
In a fan-favorite Montclair Jazz Festival tradition, Jazz House Kids Artistic Chair and Festival Artistic Director Christian McBride will also take the stage. Known as one of the most important and prolific figures in the jazz world for the last 25 years, McBride’s impact in the music world continues to expand. Recognized with his 6th GRAMMY and the noted Prix du Jazz in 2018, McBride also serves as artistic director of the internationally renowned Newport Jazz Festival and hosts National Public Radio show “Jazz Night in America,” while actively touring and performing around the world.
“Bringing this level of jazz to the “No Tickets Required” Montclair Jazz Festival, just days after the Newport Jazz Festival, makes August one of my favorite times of the year,” added McBride. “This year’s lineup will deliver an unprecedented alchemy of creative musical expression — and we can’t wait to share it with our fans and friends.”
Joining this year’s lineup is the Royal Bopsters Project, which includes Darmon Meader (Founder of New York Voices), Holli Ross, along with JAZZ HOUSE instructors Amy London and Dylan Pramuk.
Continuing its tradition, Jazz House Kids will feature as its festival artwork a piece by well-known artist Andres Chaparro that pays tribute to Billie Holiday, one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
“I’m proud that the painting ‘LADY DAY’ will serve as the face of the Montclair Jazz Festival this year,” said Chaparro. “Billie Holiday continues to be one of my favorite subjects. I feel her music and I try to serve as a conduit between the spiritual energy, the music, and the canvas.”
“Featuring jazz-inspired art as the face of Montclair Jazz Festival has been important to us since the beginning,” added Walker. “Powerful art like ‘LADY DAY’ really brings to life the meaning of our Festival tagline: ‘Hear Music; See Music; Be Music.’”
