Montclair Fire Department Frees Driver Trapped By Fallen Tree On Vehicle

On May 15th, at 5:02PM the Montclair Fire Department received a call reporting that a tree had fallen on top of a car on Bloomfield Ave in Glen Ridge, and that someone was trapped inside. Montclair’s Battalion-3, Truck-1, Engine-1 & Engine-3 responded to the scene, which ended up actually being on High St. just off of Bloomfield Ave. in Glen Ridge. Units arrived to find that a large tree had fallen onto a Volkswagen Jetta, collapsing the vehicle around the occupant. In order to gain access to the vehicle, MFD members had to first use chainsaws to remove sections of the tree. They were then able to use hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life) to spread and cut the vehicle away from the occupant. They then used a hydraulic ram to lift he tree enough to raise the dashboard to free the occupant’s legs, which were pinned beneath. The occupant was stabilized and transported to the hospital by the Glen Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Unit, according to Deputy Chief Robert Duncan, Montclair Fire Department.
