Kathy McClearn, Co-President of the Board of Trustees of the Montclair Scholarship Fund, announced that the Trustees awarded 53 college scholarships to Montclair High School 2018 graduating seniors at the June 7 MHS Awards Night.

Montclair Scholarship Fund (MSF) recipients are all college-bound and awarded aid based on school achievement, community involvement, financial eligibility and need. Some 130 applicants applied and 15 first generation college students were awarded scholarships. Acceptances include Princeton, College of New Jersey, Spelman, Rutgers, USC, Rochester Institute of Technology, Howard, Northeastern, Montclair State, Carnegie Mellon, Bard, and NYU.

The Montclair Scholarship Fund awarded six new scholarships at this year’s ceremony: the Treene Family Scholarship; the John C. Harney Montclair Lacrosse Scholarship created by his family to honor Coach Harney’s long commitment to the MHS lacrosse program; Kearny Savings Bank Award; the Shull Family Scholarship, a memorial to Elizabeth Henderson Shull, MHS Class of 1978; PNC Bank Award; and the BSTV Entertainment Scholarship, created by the Montclair television production company. Additional named scholarships awarded on June 7th include the Clem Taylor Journalism Scholarship, the Craig A. MacCallum Memorial STEM/Aviation Scholarship, the Jean H. Kidd Memorial Scholarship, the Ernest S. Prince Memorial Scholarship, the Katz Family Theater Award, the Craig Gonzalez Scholarship, the Gary F. Whitlock Memorial Scholarship, the Robert S. Hurt Memorial Scholarship, the William DeLorenzo, Sr. Memorial Scholarship and the Richard I. Bonsal Memorial Scholarship.

Montclair Scholarship Fund single and multi-year awards are applied to the cost of tuition with the overall mission of reducing student debt load. Co-President and Board Trustee Susann Connors notes, “The skyrocketing cost of tuition really puts a tremendous burden on students who have worked very hard to qualify for college and are struggling to put together a four-year funding plan. The Montclair Scholarship Fund’s goal is to reduce overall college debt by narrowing the gap between total costs and available funding. We are grateful to the greater Montclair community for supporting fundraisers such as Mardi Gras Montclair, making individual and corporate donations, and establishing scholarships that support the opportunities that a college degree brings.”
