Best Ice Cream Fix: The Scoop On Where To Spend National Ice Cream Day

Any excuse to go out for ice cream is a good excuse, and National Ice Cream Day (Sunday, July 15, 2018) reminds us just how many yummy ice cream spots we have in and around Baristaville. Here are our ideas for celebrating National Ice Cream Day (one scoop or two is up to you.)

Holsten’s Brookdale Confectionary, Bloomfield

Holsten’s Banana Royale

It was good enough for Tony Soprano and his family and it’s been a Bloomfield institution for more than 75 years! Holsten’s is also the spot for mint chip fans as well as anyone who likes a puddle of hot fudge with their ice cream.

Absolute Zero, Montclair

Absolute Zero

If you haven’t had Thai-style rolled ice cream yet — maybe you need to correct that. Absolute Zero puts on a show (watch a video here) of pouring fresh milk and cream along with other ingredients on a frozen surface and then scraping, to create ice cream rolls. The result is a dense, icy cold treat that is filling (we recommend sharing a serving). We love toppings like Pockies, hot fudge (naturally) or a toasted marshmallow.

Absolute Zero, 410 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, (862)-213-3748

Applegate Farm, Montclair

Applegate Farm

Since 1927, there has been homemade ice cream at Applegate Farm and we never want that to change. Stopping by the Farm for a cone or a sundae is the quintessential Montclair ice cream experience. We recommend Peanut Butter Fudge Brownie on a cone or the over-the-top Frozen Campfire Sundae.

Applegate Farm, 616 Grove Street, Upper Montclair, 973-744-5900

Gelotti of Montclair

Gelotti of Montclair

We love gelato, ice cream’s sexy Italian cousin, and we love soft serve. Fortunately, Gelotti of Montclair has both — along with classic and inventive flavors like Coconut and Pineapple vegan soft serve (pictured) and caramel apple gelato.

Gelotti of Montclair, 571 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, 973-509-1607

Mark & Julie’s Homemade Ice Cream, West Orange

Mark and Julie’s Homemade Ice Cream

Oh, Mark and Julie – you had us at Salty Caramel Pretzel (pictured). If you’re lucky and you drop by Mark and Julie’s, you might find this specialty flavor, along with Summer Peach or maybe Moose Tracks, among the 52 or so flavors.

Mark & Julie’s Homemade Ice Cream, 476 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange, 973-731-6011
