DJ Brother Mister, aka Christian McBride, is coming back to town for the hottest, hippest party of the summer — the second annual DJ Brother Mister Old School Funk + Soul Dance Party on Friday, July 27!
The alter ego of six-time GRAMMY Award-winning bassist Christian McBride, DJ Brother Mister will spin classic R&B, soul and funk on original analog vinyl from what he considers the “sweet spot” of dance music, from 1966 to 1986. McBride not only spins tunes, but breaks out his electric bass and plays along to the music, making the night a can’t-miss performance party like no other.
McBride, who also serves as artistic director of Jazz House Kids and music director of the Montclair Jazz Festival, says the name “Brother Mister” came from the “Godfather of Soul,” James Brown.
“He used to call everyone ‘mister.’ When he really got to know you and felt comfortable with you, he’d call you ‘Brother Mister.’ When I got to work with Mr. Brown, he called me that one time. I’ll never forget it,” said McBride.
Hosted by Jazz House Kids, the DJ Brother Mister bash kicks off the Festival’s two-week footprint of music across town which includes a free lunchtime and evening summer concert series at Montclair State University, July 30-August 10; and JAM, an evening of fun and music at Montclair Center on Saturday, August 4. The music will culminate in Nishuane Park, Saturday, August 11th from 12 noon to 9 pm, for the “No Tickets Required” Montclair Jazz Fest with headliners Eddie Palmieri + his Afro Caribbean Jazz Sextet; Christian McBride & his acclaimed acoustic quintet, Inside Straight; Oliver Lake Trio 3; the Royal Bopsters; and the Jazz House Collective tribute to “Slide” Hampton. The festival will be livestreamed in its entirety so that music lovers around the globe can be part of it.
DJ Brother Mister will be held at 18 Label in Montclair, a hip 8,000 square foot event space created by makeup mogul Bobbi Brown and her developer husband Steven Plofker, with exposed brick walls and industrial charm adding to the ambiance. In addition to 18 Label, event partners include The Pinot Project, Egan & Sons, Ruthies Bar-B-Que & Pizza and North Coast Brewing Co.
