Giveaway: See the Awe-Inspiring MOMIX at the Joyce Theater

MOMIX shows are always exhilarating and awe-inspiring, and the self-titled “MOMIX” tour fulfills all expectations. Utilizing inventive lighting, props, costumes, and the dancers’ bodies to create ethereal, challenging, and sometimes comical, performances, MOMIX is back at Chelsea’s The Joyce Theater through August 12th, 2018.

Featuring pieces gleaned from past shows, including last year’s tour of “Opus Cactus,” the company challenges the audience with dances focused on illusion that rely on plays of light, extraordinary athletic ability, inventive and playful costumes, and incredible choreography. Audience favorites included “TUU,” in which two dancers seem to become one, “Marigolds,” a joyful piece of symbiosis between costume and dance, and “Table Talk,” in which a single dancer partners with a dining table, as Fred Astaire once danced with an umbrella.

“Spawning” is mesmerizing. It also is one of two pieces with nudity.

The most breathtaking piece is “Paper Trails,” created for the 35th Anniversary of MOMIX. Projections of symbols and words across the backdrop and on dancers bodies become a vital part of the performance. Rolls of paper reflect the lighting and eventually become costumes as dancers wrap the crumpling paper around themselves. The entire audience was rapt, practically holding its collective breath, throughout the performance. NB: This is one of two pieces with nudity.

“Echoes of Narcissus”

Other standout performances include the mesmerizing “Echoes of Narcissus,” in which a reflective base creates the illusion of two dancers, not one. “Man Fan” and “Spawning” are beautiful dances that utilize light play and a towering silk fan in the former, and large balloon-like balls in the latter. The final piece, “If You Need Some Body,” doubles the size of the company with mannequins that are worn, danced with, and thrown across the stage. It was a very happy and fun-filled end to the show.
