UPDATE: Due to a severe weather storm system – the 9th Annual MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL has been canceled today.
It’s almost here!
The 2018 Montclair Jazz Festival is this Saturday, August 11th from 12 noon to 9 p.m. at Nishuane Park (rain or shine). The “No Tickets Required” will also be live-streamed; Montclair Jazz Festival has grown from a gathering of 300 friends to more than 10,000 attendees from across the region and many thousands more who watch the live-stream from around the world.
Luckily you can be there front and center, to experience jazz legends and luminaries along with the next generation — young, aspiring musicians who are the future of jazz.
Founded by jazz vocalist and recording artist Melissa Walker, with creative direction from her husband, virtuoso jazz bassist Christian McBride, Montclair Jazz Festival is Jazz House Kids premiere community engagement program.
So it’s only fitting that the festival also includes more than 125 emerging musicians, ranging from age eight to eighteen, from the Jazz House Summer Workshop performing in 10 student ensembles and vocal groups.
Headlining the Montclair Jazz Festival is Latin music giant, NEA Jazz Master and 10-time GRAMMY Award-winning pianist, composer and bandleader Eddie Palmieri. For six decades, Palmieri has thrilled fans worldwide with his eclectic and inclusive approach to Latin music.
Montclair Jazz Festival will also feature the internationally renowned Trio 3, just days after headlining at this year’s Newport Jazz Festival. Trio 3 draws from Montclair’s very own jazz royalty: Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman, and Andrew Cyrille.
JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Artistic Chair and Festival Artistic Director Christian McBride will also take the stage with his acclaimed acoustic quintet, Inside Straight. Recognized with his 6th GRAMMY and the noted Prix du Jazz in 2018, McBride also serves as artistic director of the internationally renowned Newport Jazz Festival.
Joining this year’s lineup is the Royal Bopsters Project, which includes Darmon Meader (Founder of New York Voices), Holli Ross, along with JAZZ HOUSE KiDS instructors Amy London and Dylan Pramuk.
Family Fun Galore
The Family Jazz Discovery Zone Stage features performances throughout the day by the Jazz House Alumni Ensemble and Adult Ensemble. A host of kid-friendly activities includes jazz story time by the Montclair Public Library and music-inspired art projects led by the Montclair Art Museum.
There will be plenty of food and drink throughout the day, including the return of the popular Beer Garden, sponsored by North Coast Brewing Co. New this year — wine from new sponsor — The Pinot Project. And check out the wide array of food vendors below.
Leave the car at home! The FREE Montclair Jazz Fest Shuttle will stop at several key parking points throughout Montclair and West Orange. An expanded bike valet sponsored by Diamond Cycle will offer free, convenient parking for those traveling by two wheels. Jazz fans are invited to bring friends and family, lawn chairs, blankets and picnic
