“Not Just October,” Addressing The Realities of Domestic Violence, To Debut in Montclair

“Not Just October” a powerful and inspiring theatrical production addressing the realities of domestic violence, is coming to Montclair and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to S.O.F.I.A , Start Out Fresh Intervention Advocates, a Montclair-based non-profit domestic violence awareness organization.

Wanda Edwards, whose documentary film, Colors of Survival premiered in October 2016, has written Not Just October, a follow-up play featuring 12 women over a timespan of 12 months with 12 distinct personal experiences. Not Just October is filled with both riveting and harrowing stories of survival from women.

Not Just October

Not Just October’s cast will include real-life domestic abuse survivors.

As with Colors of Survival, which presented the harsh realities of domestic violence and focused on the hope of surviving, Not Just October continues the discussion. The production’s main objective is to show the effects of domestic violence through narrative, music and dance. In addition, the play was created to engage, encourage and empower. The victims and survivors were not the only ones in mind when creating Not Just October.

Families, co-workers, friends, neighbors and faith communities will also benefit from viewing this performance. These groups are closest to the pain, abuse and anguish in which victims and survivors endure.

As playwright and domestic violence survivor/crusader, Edwards knows firsthand the emotions experienced. After years of being in an abusive marriage, she escaped and relocated from Montclair to Phoenix, Arizona. Soon after settling, she started the non-profit organization, “A Walk In Her Shoes”, which focused on ministering to victims and survivors of domestic violence. Edwards also became a certified domestic violence advocate; she currently volunteers with S.O.F.I.A and is also a member of Arizona, New Jersey and National Coalitions.

Not Just October will make its stage debut in Montclair on October 14, 2018 at the United Way’s Building Auditorium. For more information on Not Just October, please follow on Facebook.
