Trick or Read! Montclair Book Lady Needs Your Help To Fund Halloween Costumes & Books For Montclair Kids in Need

Montclair resident and president of the Scholastic Book Club Judy Newman is working on a Montclair community outreach program, Trick or Read, designed to raise funds for any child in Montclair that can’t afford a Halloween costume.

Newman is better known as the “Montclair book lady.” Every Halloween, thousands of kids gather at her house on Montclair Avenue for a special treat — 3-4 books she lets each child choose for themselves. This year, she wanted to take Halloween to the next level and make sure every child who wants a costume has one.

“Scholastic is committed to inspire all children to see themselves as readers and learn to love to read,” says Newman. “We will do whatever it takes to help kids choose, own and read their own books — connect kids with authors, dress up in costumes, host a costume drive, and produce a party with a live band inspired by book characters. One thing that’s central to Scholastic Book Clubs is every project gives children the freedom to choose — from which books to read, to what costume to wear for Halloween.”

Scholastic is partnering with six local organizations in Montclair including Succeed2gether, Reaching Out Montclair, IMANI, the MEDC and the Community Pre-K to raise awareness for the program and help raise the funds needed so every child in town can have a brand new Halloween costume.
