Montclair Man Identified in Fatal Pedestrian Incident on Bloomfield Avenue

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Montclair Police Chief Todd Conforti announced today that the Montclair Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating a fatal pedestrian incident.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. today a male was struck and killed while crossing Bloomfield Avenue near Lloyd Road in Montclair. The victim has been identified as Samson Hum, 52, of Montclair. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:01 a.m.

He was hit by two cars — a Ford Focus and a Jeep Wrangler. Both drivers remained at the scene. At this time no one has been charged.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Additional details will be released as they become available.

  1. Quite sad. I attribute this to the growing number of wreckless drivers transiting Montclair’s thoroughfares. There happens to be a crosswalk at the location of this unfortunate accident, but there is no traffic control device in way of it. I would guess that if the drivers were traveling at the posted speed limit, this incident could have been avoided, or at least less severe. When crossing Bloomfield Ave, you are crossing at your own risk, even where there are traffic signals indicating right-of-way.
