Baristanet Profile: Monk Inyang

Name: Monk Inyang

Where do you live? Montclair

When did you move there? We just moved here in April.

Where did you grow up? North Newark

How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion?  I recently wrote my first novel for middle school kids, and I’ve been having a lot of fun meeting people who are into it. It’s called Nightmare Detective, and it’s about a boy with recurring nightmares who meets a girl in his dream that teaches him how to stop them. The response has been great so far, and I’ve been surprised by how many parents are buying the book for their kids and end up enjoying it themselves.

Coffee, tea or … ? I’m not as big on coffee as other people. I’ll drink a cup every couple days, but I prefer tea.

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day?  We have two kids aged 4 and 5 so the TYPICAL weekend day is a child’s birthday party. The perfect weekend day would include some outdoor fun that doesn’t include birthday cake and bounce houses, a good meal with the family, and a fun movie.

What’s your favorite local restaurant? We’re still trying to find some restaurants to check out. So far, our favorite is probably Ani Ramen.

What’s on your nightstand? A toy owl Halloween decoration and a Kindle paperwhite. I’m currently reading The Handmaid’s Tale. #PraisedBe

What are you listening to? Depends on my mood. I like Nas’ new album Nasir. I like worship music. When I’m writing, I play Solange’s album A Seat at the Table on repeat.

What are your current indulgences? My wife and I are big on binging TV shows (Insecure, Handmaid’s Tale, Blackish). She’s not into Game of Thrones and Stranger Things like me, so I watch those on my own (her loss).

What talent you would most like to have? I wish I could sing. It’s probably better that I can’t because I would definitely be the annoying person who sings all the time when it’s not needed.

What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about Montclair? Everyone knows about all the dozens of great restaurants. Whenever we ask for suggestions, the number of choices is overwhelming.

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? He made a positive impact on everyone he was around, and he made us laugh. If he could sing, he would have been perfect.
