Weekend Family Fun: Winter Wonderland, Choo Choo Soul and More!

Well, here we are – the last weekend of 2018! We’ve gathered up some fun and family-friendly things to do in and around town. Take a look!

This weekend and through January 1, enjoy Bergen County’s Winter Wonderland at Van Saun Park (216 Forest Avenue, Paramus). Attractions include open air ice skating, kids’ beginner synthetic rink, Santa’s North Pole Dome, activities and games, train rides, carousel rides, zoo entry, food trucks, and more! Tickets are $15 for general admission. Children 3 and under are free. Discounts available for active military and veterans, as well as senior citizens. The Wonderland will be open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily.

iPlay America (Schanck Road, Freehold) will present Choo Choo Soul on Sunday at 11:00 AM. This concert and meet and greet. Based on Disney Junior’s fan favorite, this live show is fun for all ages. Tickets start at $15.

This is the final weekend for the 2018 Holiday Lights Spectacular at Turtle Back Zoo (560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange). From 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM nightly through December 31, take a winter stroll through the Zoo under the sparkling lights of over 50 winter and animal characters. Admission is free, but a donation of non-perishable food items, new toys, or gently used coats is requested.

Newark Museum (49 Washington Street, Newark) will host its Family Drop-Ins program on this and every Saturday. December’s theme is Elements of Nature ~ Earth, Water, Fire, Air. Explore and create using inspiration from the Museum’s collection that reflects the elements that are around us daily. Drop in anytime between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.   This program is included in the price of admission.

Barnes & Noble at Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host Storytime and Activities Featuring The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors on Saturday at 11:00 AM. From the author of The Day the Crayons Quit comes a laugh-out-loud hilarious picture book about the epic tale of the classic game Rock, Paper, Scissors. Stop in for storytime and get a coupon from the Café for a grilled cheese sandwich with milk or juice for $4! Activities to follow.

The Montclair Public Library (50 S. Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host Winter Move & Grove with Miss Jolie on Saturday from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM in the main library auditorium. Join this special winter-themed Move & Groove party for little ones with Miss Jolie Della Valle. Geared towards ages 2-6, Miss Jolie plays classic favorites in addition to original interactive songs. Singing, dancing, clapping, and stomping are highly encouraged! Jolie performs with here ukulele along with other musical instruments and props for the children. She is the author of Georgie and the Ants in the Pants, and books will be available for purchase. No registration is required.

Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp.) will host A Special Holiday Scavenger Hunt daily through December 31. Head over to the Arboretum for this special scavenger hunt, “Walking in a Winter Wonderland.” Bring your camera or cell phone and a good set of observant eyes. Find most of the items on the list and take home a prize for the entire family. Drop in any time between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM. Library (50 S. Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) will host its Sunday Drop-In Studio. Drop by MAM’s Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio to explore a range of art materials and processes based on artwork on view in the galleries. Open-ended activities are designed to spark creativity in artists of all ages and abilities with seasoned MAM studio instructors standing by to provide hands-on assistance and technical advice. Reservations are not required, and visitors of all ages are welcome! This event is free for members and included in museum admission for non-members.
