Weekend Family Fun: Pinkalicious, Magic, Pete the Cat and more!

The weekend is here! We’ve rounded up some fun and family friendly things to do in and around town. Check ‘em out!

The Essex County Environmental Center will host Family Yoga on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Enjoy an adventure of calming breath, fun asanas/poses, and gentle stretches with your nearest and dearest in a friendly, go-with-the-flow atmosphere. Advance registration and minimum number of participants required; call 973.228.8776. Cost is $10 per child and $12 per adult. This class if for children ages 5 and up.

Just Kidding at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway at 95th Street, NYC) will continue its 2018-19 season with a performance of Meet the Remarkable Renaldo on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Meet the Remarkable Renaldo, here to entertain you with your own one-man private circus! Be prepared to be astonished as you and your kids join in on the juggling, pranks, magic and humor with this world class clown.  Tickets are $14 for Members and $17 for Non-Members.

Every Saturday, the Newark Museum (49 Washington Street) will host its Family Drop-Ins program. January’s theme is Community & Celebration. Our community, environment and cultural celebrations define us as well as our families and friends who fill us with joy and wonder. Drop in anytime between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. On both Saturday and Sunday, enjoy self-guided weekend family programs. There are three Gallery guides, Red, Yellow, and Blue, developed to encourage 3-5-year olds and their families to discover together and encourage observation and conversation. These guides are available at the front desk from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Finally, on both days, enjoy the MakerSPACE Drop-in Programs from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Inspired by the Museum’s collections and special events, monthly themes are designed for visitors of all ages to drop in and experiment with the tools and materials of artists. Get messy with clay and paint and found materials. Get creative with blocks and digital computer tools.   All of these programs are included in the price of admission.

Barnes & Noble at Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host Storytime and Activities Featuring Pig the Pug on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Pig is a greedy and selfish Pug who has so many toys, yet he refuses to share with his poor friend Trevor. Little does he know that being greedy has its consequences. Will Pig learn to share? Stop in for storytime and get a coupon from the Café for a grilled cheese sandwich with milk or juice for $4! Activities to follow.

Montclair Public Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host Therapy Dog Visit: Meet Cruz! on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Meet and read with Cruz, a retired racing greyhound. Greyhounds are the second fastest land animal (behind the cheetah) and can run up to 45 miles an hour. He lived in Florida, ran 104 races and won 17 of them. Now that he’s retired (at age 5), he enjoys walks, car rides, lots of naps, and reading in the nice quiet library. Registration is required. Each reader will have 5 minutes with Cruz. Ages 5 and up.

Mayo Performing Arts Center (100 South Street, Morristown) will present The Magic of Adam Trent on Saturday at 7:30 PM. Direct from Broadway, Adam Trent brings his signature brand of magic and illusion to this high-tech spectacle. Adam Trent’s production is an immersive entertainment extravaganza of magic, comedy and music perfect for the entire family. Don’t miss the next generation of magic. Tickets are $29-$79.

On Saturday and Sunday, Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp) will host a Family Photo Scavenger Hunt. Grab a camera or phone and stop by the Haggerty Education Center for a nature photo scavenger hunt. Visitors can pick up the list, head outside and shoot away. Take a picture of every item, return to the Education Center and pick up your prize. Lists change monthly. January’s theme is “Can You Believe That?” Cost is $10 per family at the door.

Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center (247 Southern Blvd, Chatham) will host Maple Sugaring Demonstrations from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM and then from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM on both Saturday and Sunday. Learn to identify and tap maple trees, collect sap, and make syrup over a wood-fired evaporator. Taste-test different delicious syrups, including syrup made right at the Great Swamp OEC. Preregistration is not required, but seating is first come, first served. Cost is $3 per person per session for ages 3 and up.

BergenPAC (30 North Van Brunt Street, Englewood) will present Pinkalicious The Musical on Sunday at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Vital Theatre Company’s long-running hit Pinkalicious returns to the BergenPAC. The musical is based on the best-selling children’s book “Pinkalicous” by Elizabeth Kann ad Victoria Kann. Tickets start at $15.

Kean Stage (1000 Morris Avenue, Union) will present Pete the Cat as part of its Family Series on Sunday at 3:00 PM. Jimmy Biddle is nervous about how his family’s new houseguest, a groovy blue cat named Pete, is going to shake things up. When Jimmy draws a blank in art class on the last day of school, it turns out Pete is the perfect friend to help him out. Tickets are $15. This is a sensory friendly performance.

Kids ‘N Comedy’s next show is this Sunday at 1:00 PM at Gotham Comedy Club (208 West 23rd Street, NYC). Looking forward to a fresh new year? Ready for a clean slate? Got your unrealistic resolutions all set? Why not start the year with some laughs then? Come listen to the teen comics as they share their hopes and dreams for the year ahead. Tickets are $18.

Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) will host its Sunday Drop-In Studio. Drop by MAM’s Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio to explore a range of art materials and processes based on artwork on view in the galleries. Open-ended activities are designed to spark creativity in artists of all ages and abilities with seasoned MAM studio instructors standing by to provide hands-on assistance and technical advice. Reservations are not required, and visitors of all ages are welcome! This event is free for members and included in museum admission for non-members.
