Watchung Booksellers (54 Fairfield Street, Montclair) will host Saturday Morning Storytime from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM. This week’s book is Woke Baby by Mahogany Browne. This lyrical and empowering book is both a celebration of what it means to be a baby and what it means to be woke.
Just Kidding at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway at 95th Street, NYC) will continue its 2018-19 season with a performance by The Okee Dokee Brothers on Saturday at 11:00 AM. This GRAMMY winning Minnesota duo remind children (and their adults) of their intrinsic ability to discover, imagine, and create through music. With witty lyrics, off-the-wall humor, strong musicianship, and a unique fold/bluegrass style, prepare for a hoe-down without leaving the city. Tickets are $14 for Members and $17 for Non-Members.
On Saturday, NJPAC (1 Center Street, Newark) will host Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in Concert. After the destruction of the Death Star, the Empire has regrouped – with Darth Vader leading the hunt for Luke Skywalker. Star Wars and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra join forces for this event, featuring the iconic movie on the big screen with the NJSO performing John Williams’ legendary score live. Performances are at 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Tickets are $35-$125.
Newark Museum (49 Washington Street) will host its Creative Play Program on Saturday at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Three- to five-year-olds and their caretakers are invited to enjoy a special time before the Museum opens to the public. Explore the Museum’s art and science collections through storytelling, song, playful activities and an art-making project. Themes vary each month. January’s theme is Shadows & Silhouettes. Every Saturday, the Museum will host its Family Drop-Ins program. January’s theme is Community & Celebration. Our community, environment and cultural celebrations define us as well as our families and friends who fill us with joy and wonder. Drop in anytime between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. On both Saturday and Sunday, enjoy self-guided weekend family programs. There are three Gallery guides, Red, Yellow, and Blue, developed to encourage 3-5-year olds and their families to discover together and encourage observation and conversation. These guides are available at the front desk from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Finally, on both days, enjoy the MakerSPACE Drop-in Programs from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Inspired by the Museum’s collections and special events, monthly themes are designed for visitors of all ages to drop in and experiment with the tools and materials of artists. Get messy with clay and paint and found materials. Get creative with blocks and digital computer tools. All of these programs are included in the price of admission.
Barnes & Noble at Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host Storytime and Activities Featuring Clifford the Big Red Dog on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Clifford is an adorable dog whose well-meaning bumblings have great kid appeal especially for his owner, Emily Elizabeth. Join us as we read about everyone’s favorite big red dog. Stop in for storytime and get a coupon from the Café for a grilled cheese sandwich with milk or juice for $4! Activities to follow.
On Saturday and Sunday, Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp) will host a Family Photo Scavenger Hunt. Grab a camera or phone and stop by the Haggerty Education Center for a nature photo scavenger hunt. Visitors can pick up the list, head outside and shoot away. Take a picture of every item, return to the Education Center and pick up your prize. Lists change monthly. January’s theme is “Can You Believe That?” Cost is $10 per family at the door.
Mayers Consulting will present their All-Ages Showcase from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday at DROM (85 Avenue A, NYC). See some of the liveliest, most unique and exceptional performances for today’s families. Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. Mayers Consulting offers an eclectic, modern and diverse roster of artists that has been carefully curated for the youth and family audience. Performers include Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats, The Pop Ups, Michael & The Rockness Monsters, JoJo & The Pinecones, Wow in the World, Gustafer Yellowgold, Billy Kelly, Falu’s Bazaar, and Lard Dog & The Band of Shy.
On Sunday, Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center (247 Southern Blvd, Chatham Twp) will host Trail Treasure Hunt from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Calling all treasure hunters! Enjoy a seasonal nature scavenger hunt where families work together to follow clues and find the answers to nature riddles along the trails.
Frelinghuysen Arboretum will host Games and Gardens: Family Garden Game Day on Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Kick that cabin fever and get out of the house and into the garden this winter with Family Garden Games. Play Garden-opoly, Plant Scrabble and join in the garden Bingo challenge and win prizes. Even try you hand at life-sized chess and dig into popcorn and other seasonal snacks. Cost is $3 per person. Call 973.326.7601 to register.
On Sunday, NJPAC (1 Center Street, Newark) will present The Hip Hop Nutcracker featuring Kurtis Blow. NJPAC’s very own holiday smash – an urban dance retelling of the timeless fairy tale, featuring rap legend Kurtis Blow as special guest MC – returns for two promotional broadcast tapings before a live audience. Tickets are $29. Seating is general admission for the promotional broadcast tapings. All audience members will be directed to seats by house management based on requirements determined by the show’s producers. Audience members may appear on screen.

Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) will host its Sunday Drop-In Studio. Drop by MAM’s Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio to explore a range of art materials and processes based on artwork on view in the galleries. Open-ended activities are designed to spark creativity in artists of all ages and abilities with seasoned MAM studio instructors standing by to provide hands-on assistance and technical advice. Reservations are not required, and visitors of all ages are welcome! This event is free for members and included in museum admission for non-members.
