The Joyce Theater welcomes the world-renowned Complexions Contemporary Ballet to its stage through March 3rd 2019 as the company celebrates its 25th anniversary as a multi-cultural, leading edge company. Choreographer Dwight Rhoden blends traditional ballet moves with innovative methods, styles and cultures that create an immersive audience experience.Complexions uses just lighting and minimalist costuming for its performances, so the dancers’ bodies and the choreography truly carry the show. Balancing modern dance and traditional ballet music and moves, the variety in the pieces ensure the audience is kept on the edge of its seat. The dances that include the entire company are exhilarating, and the various moving parts mesmerize. The performances with a single dance or a pair feel intimate and sensual.
During the second week of its visit, Complexions will present the world premiere of WOKE, a physical reaction to the daily news. With music ranging from Phillip Glass, Logic, and Kendrick Lamar to remixed electronica and African drumming, this bold and socially-conscious one act ballet, WOKE features the full company and examines today’s political climate through music and movement. In addition, to honor their 25th anniversary, the company will present From Then to Now, filled with audience favorites from the dynamic 25-year history of the company. Highlights include excerpts from classics such as “Rise” featuring music of U2 (2008), and “On Holiday” (2010), which features Billy Porter singing “My Man.” All matinee shows will feature the World Premiere of Bach 25 and From Then to Now. While aimed at adults, the performances are also appropriate for young audiences.Tickets range from $10 to $66 and can be purchased online at www.Joyce.org or by phone at 212-242-0800. The Joyce Theater is located at 175 Eighth Avenue (at the corner of 19th Street), New York, NY 10011.
