Baristanet Profile: Ari Laura Kreith

Name: Ari Laura Kreith

Where do you live? Montclair (on Montclair Ave, the Halloween Street!)

When did you move there? Four years ago—hard to believe, but true! Before that we were in Jackson Heights, Queens.

Where did you grow up? 27 countries! My dad was a peripatetic mathematician. But home base was Davis, California—a college town about the size of Montclair.

How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion?

I’m the Artistic Director of Luna Stage. I’ve been here just over a year, and I love it! My passion is creating theatre that explores issues that divide our communities, and figuring out how we come together to solve problems. I fervently believe that art can make us wiser and kinder.

The final show of my first Luna season, HEARTLAND, closes this Sunday, so rush to catch if you haven’t seen it! BroadwayWorld called it a “heartfelt masterpiece rife with comedic brilliance and the triumph of the human spirit.”

Coffee, tea or … ?  Coffee! Way too much coffee. Someone once described me as “a teeny tiny girl who drinks coffee like a farmhand.” I’ve outgrown the “teeny tiny girl” part, but not the coffee.

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? Riding my bike to yoga at JaiPure, brunch at Red Eye with the family, Farmers Market outing with our Australian Shepherd, then a show at Luna!

What’s your favorite local restaurant? Anyplace with sushi, unusual ice cream, or really good coffee.

What’s on your nightstand? Shoved under my bed is an iPad full of plays I’m reading for next season. One of the first plays next season is Mrs Stern Wanders the Prussian State Library, about philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt. It’s scary and timely and funny—and I have a lot of homework to do before we start rehearsal in September!

What are you listening to? My kids just discovered punk, so I’m reliving my adolescence.

What are your current indulgences? Dark chocolate, yoga and sleep.

What talent you would most like to have? The ability to inhale carbon dioxide, exhale oxygen, and singlehandedly stop climate change by breathing.

What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about the Montclair area? People say that Luna Stage is the “best-kept secret in Essex County,” but we’re working to change that. And it’s only 10 minutes from Montclair…
