The Glen Ridge Historical Society will host an 1864 Vintage “Base Ball” game this Saturday, May 11 at 3:30 PM on Hurrell Field when the Hoboken 9 meet the Bloomfield Buzzards.
Players and umpire in period dress will participate in a game the way it was played back then, using 1864 rules. The most visible difference is no gloves, despite the hard ball, but there are many other rules differences.
All are invited. The celebration will continue after the game at Fitzgerald’s Tavern where fans can meet the players, hold replica balls and bats in their hands, and if the noise level in the restaurant allows, tell their own baseball stories (everyone has one).
Come out for a fun, educational experience!
