Baristanet Profile: Kate Tuttle

Name: Kate Tuttle

Where do you live? Montclair, in the middle part of town.

When did you move there? We moved here just before the start of the school year in August 2017.

Where did you grow up? Lawrence, Kansas.

How do you make a living? I’m a freelance writer, mostly of book reviews but I also do some journalism and essays.

Coffee, tea or … ? Coffee! Bustelo, lots of cream, no sugar.

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? Sleeping in, yard sales, seeing friends, drinking wine and eating good food.

What’s your favorite local restaurant? I’m pretty obsessed with the chilaquiles at Folklore, in West Orange.

What’s on your nightstand?

Always far too many books! Right now I’m reading three for reviews: Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino; Three Women, by Lisa Taddeo; and Aleksandar Hemon’s This Does Not Belong to You/My Parents: An Introduction. I’m also re-reading Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique because it has never stopped being relevant.

What are you listening to? Buzzcocks, Blondie, and Aimee Mann.

What are your current indulgences? Clogs and reading glasses.

What talent you would most like to have? I would love to be able to really sing well.

What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about Montclair? Someone will have to tell me, because I haven’t found it yet!

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral?

That I was a good friend, and that I raised great kids.
