Weekend Family Fun: Story Walk, MakerSPACE, Shimmer, and More!

Grab the family and head on out for some weekend family fun. We’ve gathered up some things to do, so check ‘em out!

Glen Ridge Public Library (240 Ridgewood Avenue, Glen Ridge) will host Story Walk: 10 Rubber Ducks by Eric Carle on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Take a story walk through the grounds of the Library and Municipal Lawn. You’ll walk on a path while reading 10 Rubber Ducks by Eric Carle. What’s a Story Walk? A Story Walk is a series of signs featuring sequential pages from a children’s picture book. The pages are spread throughout the grounds, allowing a reader to follow along with the story by walking.

Barnes & Noble (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host Pride Storytime Featuring Prince & Knight, Maiden & Princess, and Red: A Crayon’s Story on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Enjoy a Pride Storytime that celebrates diversity. Enjoy fun-filled activities and get a coupon for a grilled cheese sandwich with milk or juice for $4.

Westfeld Garden State Plaza (One Garden State Plaza, Paramus) will host Shimmer on Saturday at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM. Journey to a shimmering winter wonderland of circus spectacle and derring-do. Marvel at the bendy ballerina in her glistening snow globe. Find yourself aglow as the aerial snow ballet mesmerizes your senses. Astonishing acrobats, dazzling specialty acts, and glittering costumers abound in a warm and whimsical world the whole family will enjoy. This event is free. RSVP online.

On Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Reeves-Reed Arboretum (165 Hobart Avenue, Summit) will host Discovery Saturdays. Make a discovery at the Arboretum and enjoy a unique family experience. Drop by the Stackhouse Education Center, any time between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm, on Saturdays for an interactive exploration of nature. Each week discover a new plant, animal, or environmental topic through experiments, stories, games, and crafts. This week’s theme is Starfruit. Borrow an Arboretum backpack loaded with binoculars, field guides, a magnifying glass, and everything else needed for outdoor Arboretum adventure! No pre-registration is necessary. Adults must be accompanied by a child! Free for RRA members. $5.00 per child for non-members.

The Arboretum will also offer free Saturday tours at 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM from May through October. Tours begin at the Visitors Center. No reservations are required, and tours are on a first come, first served basis. Anyone under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Tours last approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Newark Museum will host a variety of activities this weekend.  The Family Gallery Program will be held on Saturday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. June’s theme for this program is Environment Light & Dark/Printmaking. Night & Day, Day & Night… let’s explore these concepts and turn them into works of art! Up for the challenge? The Self-Guided Weekend Family Program is held both Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM using the Red, Yellow & Blue Gallery Guides. These guides were developed to encourage 3-5-year olds and their families to discover together. Designed to encourage observation and conversation, they are available for free with Museum admission at the Front Desk and in the Education Lobby. Finally, the MakerSPACE Drop-in Program will be held both Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Inspired by the Museum’s collections and special events, monthly themes are designed for visitors of all ages to drop in and experiment with the tools and materials of artists. Get messy with clay and paint and found materials. Get creative with blocks and digital and computer tools. Stay as long as you like. All programs included with admission to the museum.

Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area (472 Boonton Avenue, Montville Twp) will host Trek to Tripod Rock on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This event is for ages 8 and up. Embark on a guided hike and discover the history of this unique glacial erratic. Bring a snack and water to enjoy at Tripod Rock. Preregistration is required by calling 973-334-3130. Cost is $1 per person.

Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Road, Morris Twp) will also host multiple events on Saturday.

Herbalicious will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Gather at the Farmhouse herb garden to discover how herbs enhance the taste of food. Make a sachet to take home. Cost is $6 per adult, $5 per senior, $4 per child age 4-16, $2 per child age 2-3, and free for children under 2.

Meet the Servants at the Willows will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM and again from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. During a special hands-on guided tour, learn about the domestic help at the Foster home, The Willows, during the WWI era. Help the maid with some household chores and assist in the preparation of historic foods for the cook to bake in the wood-burning stove. Cost is $6 per adult, $5 per senior, $4 per child age 4-16, $2 per child age 2-3, and free for children under age 2.

Historic Speedwell (333 Speedwell Avenue, Morristown) will host Under the Floorboards: The Hidden Parts of the Vail House on Saturday 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00PM. Join a special behind-the-scenes tour of the historic Vail House basement and learn about historic preservation and the future plans for the Vail House. Cost is $5 per adult, $4 per senior, $3 per child age 4-16, and free for children under age 4. Preregistration is required by calling 973-285-6550.


Cooper Gristmill (66 Route24, Chester Twp) will host Homemade Clay on Saturday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Flour can be used for so much more than eating. Use clay made from stoneground flour to create something special. Cost is $5 per family. Preregistration is required by calling 908-879-5463.

On both Saturday and Sunday, Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp) will host a Family Photo Scavenger Hunt from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Grab a camera or phone and stop by the Haggerty Education Center for a nature photo scavenger hunt. Visitors can pick up the list, head outside and shoot away. Take a picture of every item, return to the Education Center and pick up your prize. Lists change monthly. June’s theme is “What Smells?” Cost is $10 per family at the door.

Barnes & Noble (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host a Baby & Me Storytime for caregivers and children 0-24 months at 11:00 AM. A story will be read, and attendees can participate in activities building language skills for the little ones. This week’s book is Hello, World! Solar System.

The New Jersey State Fair Meadowlands continues through July 7th at MetLife Stadium (1 MetLife Stadium Drive, East Rutherford).  Enjoy rides and attractions, shows, fireworks, and food! For schedules, ticketing information and more, visit the website.

Also on both Saturday and Sunday, the Kelly Miller Circus will be at Willow Lake/Main Street Park (21-95 Main Street, Little Ferry). Shows will be at 2:00 PM and 4:30 PM both days. Your circus experience will be full of funny clowns, stunts, defying acts, and an overall family experience you can’t find anywhere else. Tickets start at $15.
