The Oakeside Community Garden, located at Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a Garden Party on Saturday, August 3rd, from 1–5pm.
The event is open to the public and will feature craft brews by Montclair Brewery, live acoustic music, lite bites, garden tours, lawn games, kids crafts, storytime by the Bloomfield Library, raffles and more!
The space that houses the community garden was originally developed in 1922 as a kitchen garden to serve the Oakes family residing onsite. Today, the garden continues its legacy of growing vegetables, flowers and herbs – now serving the approximately 50 members that rent plots each season. Over the course of the last 10 years, over 150 individuals from Bloomfield and neighboring towns have contributed to the garden, with many renewing members.
“We’ve been happy to see that we’ve been able to fulfill a real need in the local community for open space to grow food and connect with nature,” says garden founder, Sarah Meyer. “There is a certain magic in this place, in that it brings together people from all walks of life. Working in the dirt and watching things grow… it’s the great connector.”
So what’s next?
“Expansion,” says Meyer. “We have room to develop eight more plots in the community garden to accommodate people on our waiting list.” This season gardeners are working towards this goal by lasagna mulching an area of unused land to become future plots. The garden also hopes to serve as a community resource for local schools and group visits.
