Montclair’s new Meny Vaknin eatery, Luisa Bakery & Cafe, will have its grand opening tomorrow (Tuesday, July 30th – 6:30am-3pm), but fans flocked to the new Walnut Street location (that’s one street where you’ll never go hungry) during a soft opening Friday.
Luisa’s airy, open counter seating to the street invites you to come in and check out all the delicious offerings. Stools inside and tables and chairs outside allow you to stay and eat breakfast or linger over lunch. Takeaway options make it easy to grab a slice of quiche, a salad, sandwich or other items to take to the train or for a picnic.
The menu features some familiar favorites from sister restaurants Marcel and MishMish as well as some new additions. Breakfast made to order includes bagel sandwiches: The Committed Jew (smoked salmon, cream cheese, pickled red onions, dill sauce and zaatar) or The Proud Immigrant (scrambled egg, sliced beef brizola, tomato and harissa mayo). There’s also a selection of pita-stuffed egg sammies, including the El Guapo, with mushroom, avocado, cheddar cheese and salsa verde.
For a hearty lunch, we loved the made to order Zaatar & Honey Glazed Fried Chicken Sandwich ($12.95), featuring harissa mayo, lemon confit, sweet and sour cucumbers on a seeded burger bun.
Luisa’s menu includes some intriguing smoothie options, such as Peace in the Mideast (dates, banana, walnuts, cinnamon, honey, almond milk, $6.50) or Green Is The New Everything (kale, spinach, banana, green apple, iced green tea, $6.50)
And if you love sweets, Luisa offers those delicious, moist tea cakes (we’re partial to the almond) as well as croissants, turnovers and more.
