Weekend Family Fun: Where’s Waldo Scavenger Hunt, Tiaras, Ice Cream and More!

Whether your weekend is just getting started or it’s a long one for holiday, we’ve gathered up some fun and family-friendly things to do in and around town. Check ‘em out!

The Where’s Waldo Watchung Plaza Scavenger Hunt will run the entire month of July in Watchung Plaza (Montclair). Visit 20 stores in Watchung Plaza and find Waldo. Spend one afternoon on the challenge or visit each store on different days.

Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Road, Morris Twp) will host Hitch a Ride on Saturday from 10:15 AM to 12:00 PM. Enjoy a leisurely narrated, open-air wagon ride around the historic farm. Cost is $6 per adult, $5 per senior, $4 per child age 4-16, $2 per child age 2-3, and free for children under 2.


Barnes & Noble Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host Storytime and Activities Featuring How to Catch a Dinosaur on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Do you have what it takes to catch a prehistoric pal? Stop in for story time and activities and get a coupon from the Café for a grilled cheese sandwich with milk or juice for $4 (Café stores only).

Also on Saturday, Cooper Gristmill (66 Route 24, Chester Twp) will host Gadgets and Gizmos from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Explore the amazing machines, both simple and complex, that grind the grain at the Gristmill. Learn about the inventor of gristmills, Oliver Evans, and create your own invention out of recycled materials. Cost is $3 per adult, $2 per senior, $1 per child age 4-16, and free for children under 4.

Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area (472 Boonton Avenue, Montville Twp) will host Nature’s Fireworks on Saturday from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Learn about the life of a firefly and take a short hike to witness their natural light show at this all-ages event. Cost is $5 per person age 3 and up. Preregistration is required by calling 973-334-3130.

On Saturday and Sunday (and the rest of the week too until October!), Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp) will host a Family Photo Scavenger Hunt from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Grab a camera or phone and stop by the Haggerty Education Center for a nature photo scavenger hunt. Visitors can pick up the list, head outside and shoot away.  Cost is $10 per family at the door.

The Eclectic Chic Boutique (547 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair) will host Weekend Workshop: Make a Tiara or Crown on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Learn how to make your own tiara or crown using aluminum wire and jewelry-making tools. Bring your kids for a fun parent and child day out. Cost is $30 per participant. All materials and tools are provided. RSVP is required as space is limited. The recommended age for this activity is 7+.

The Whippany Railway Museum will celebrate National Ice Cream Month on Sunday with a 10-mile, 45-minute round trip Ice Cream Train ride. Your ticket includes a scoop of delicious ice cream after the ride. Four ride times are available: 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM, and 4:00 PM. Tickets are $19 for adults, $14 for children age 2-11, and lap-sitting children 1 year and younger are free for Club Car Seating. For Caboose Seating, adults are $16, children age 2-11 are $11, and lap-sitting children 1 year and younger are free. Tickets are available online.

On Sunday, Barnes & Noble Clifton Commons will host Baby & Me Storytime Featuring Hello, World! My Body. This event is for and children 0-24 months old and their caregivers. A book will be read and attendees will be invited to participate in activities featuring sensory growth for the little ones. Plus, get a free Starbucks tall coffee (hot or iced).

Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Road, Morris Twp) will host Bugs on the Farm on Sunday 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Not all bugs are bad. Discover the insects that are beneficial to a farm and those that could cause a farmer to lose his crops. Cost is $6 per adult, $5 per senior, $4 per child age 4-16, $2 per child age 2-3, and free for children under age 2.

The New Jersey State Fair Meadowlands will wrap up this weekend at MetLife Stadium (1 MetLife Stadium Drive, East Rutherford).  Enjoy rides and attractions, shows, fireworks, and food! For schedules, ticketing information and more, visit the website.
