Baristanet Profile: Anna Coy

Anna Coy

Where do you live? I live in Montclair off of Walnut Street with my husband and nearly three-year-old daughter. We love how walkable it is.

When did you move here? We moved from Philly to Montclair in the summer of 2014 when my husband started teaching at William Paterson. Though we had little time and zero knowledge of the community, friends that live in the area suggested Montclair as a good fit for us. Thankfully they were correct, because we loved it from the minute we arrived.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in a tiny town in upstate Pennsylvania, so small in fact that it’s just easier to say north of Scranton.

How do you make a living? I am the owner of Blooms in Hand, a full service floral design studio and subscription delivery service for Essex County. Thanks to this awesome community and support I’ve received from the get go, business is “Blooming.”  Just a couple of years ago I started out of a home studio in Montclair and now we are now in a store front in Verona.

Coffee, tea or … ? You had me at coffee. Color of a brown paper bag with one sugar.

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend? Having many weddings, deliveries and special events that fall on weekends, I’ve learned to savor the free weekend. If I can squeeze in a brunch and some outside time with my daughter, it’s a success. Last weekend I snuck off and went to a flea market followed by the afternoon at Verona Park with my family. It was perfection.

What’s your favorite local restaurant? That is such a difficult question because I like so many! But let’s make a great dining day with brunch at The Corner, lunch at Plum, a dinner at Corso and dessert at Vanillamore.

What’s on your nightstand? A monitor and an alarm clock…both have the purpose of interrupting my sleep. Hence the coffee addiction.

What are you listening to? When I’m floral arranging, I like French Cafe Music on Pandora. When I’m driving, I like the music I listened to in high school, very similar to the music they now play at Shoprite.

What are your current indulgences? I mentioned flea markets earlier. I have an addiction for mid-century modern furniture and objects. I rescue chairs. My studio is accumulating quite a collection. I can’t stop.

What talent would you most like to have? I’d love to be able to sing. I’m truly terrible. In high school I auditioned for the school musical and was given the part of the mute.

What’s the best/worst-kept secret about Montclair? It is brimming with creativity and opportunity. The amazing talent and creative thinking I see everyday in this town never ceases to amaze me.

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? I hope they say, “She looked great for 150.”
