Stop For Pedestrians In Montclair Crosswalks: Schumacher Video Hopes To Raise Awareness

If you go to Bloomfield Avenue, especially by the Dunkin Donuts near Midland Avenue, you may see cars through the crosswalk while there are people walking across the avenue. You only need to be there for a few minutes to see it happen, according to Honey Correia, president of Schumacher Insurance Agency.

Correia was motivated to create the video and raise awareness, especially now that schools are open.

Drivers must stop for pedestrians in a marked crosswalk, rather than yield. From the State of New Jersey:

A. The driver of a vehicle must stop and stay stopped for a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk, but shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except at crosswalks when the movement of traffic is being regulated by police officers or traffic control signals, or where otherwise prohibited by municipal, county, or State regulation, and except where a pedestrian tunnel or overhead pedestrian crossing has been provided, but no pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield.

Whenever any vehicle is stopped to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such stopped vehicle.

Every pedestrian upon a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.

  1. The rectangular pedestrian flashing beacons (RPFB) are quickly ineffective. No surprise. First, they are yellow colored lights. A yellow light in NJ means go…actually, it means speed up.

    Second, they can’t be red because that would be consistent with the law. Everyone is confused by the silly language of the law. The choice of colors is just politicians screwing with the general public. They get bored, too. This is their idea of fun.

    Third, NJ pedestrians only have the right of way in a theoretical sense. What pedestrian is going to prove the theory? The Michelin Tire Man?

    Fourth, enforcement is just anti-business. It is far better to risk a few lives than to drive down property taxes.

  2. oh, I forgot….Bloomfield @ Midland remains #1 even though it was the first to get a RPFB.

    Does it matter if xxx intersection is the 10th worst if you are that pedestrian that gets maimed or killed?

    It just seems like this shouldn’t be intersection specific/. Fixing the worse will not change anything.

    Roadway engineering is not the solution!

    The other day I got all kinds of cars to stop for me to cross and they were going 35 mph. A correction officer with a gun was crossing with me. Amazing how the drivers themselves got educated. I asked the officer his experience. He said his experiences were positive and so not any reason to pull out his gun.

Thanks for bringing attention to this important issue; actually there is a known error in the language of the “official” text above which is supposed to have been corrected: vehicles are also supposed to STOP (not just “yield”!) to a pedestrian in an unmarked crosswalk”! Any intersection is a “crosswalk”, marked or not.

    Pedestrians also need to be proactive; I always hold my arm out like a traffic cop to make cars stop and make glaring eye contact with drivers. When they don’t stop, I scream “YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO STOP!” (you idiot!).
    Be safe and aware at all times!
