Montclair Brewery, Montclair’s first and only microbrewery, owned by Denise and Leo Sawadogo, will celebrate one official year in business with music, special beer releases, and fun for all attendees this weekend.
After penning their business plan and registering the business in 2014, Leo and Denise secured the building at 101 Walnut Street in Montclair, opening their business officially on October 12, 2018.
Passionate about changing the norm for an industry that is wholly lacking in diversity, Leo and Denise are managing their microbrewery in a way that pays testament to their African and Caribbean descent.
The anniversary weekend’s special releases include a quad of barrel-aged beers, some aged for as long as six months while others aged for the more typical two to three months. The barrel-aged series includes the Kingston Porter Aged, a Montclair Brewery staple porter aged in Jamaican rum barrels and the Highmont Stout Bourbon Barrel Aged stout which will round out it recently released MB Bourbon Barrel-Aged Brown ale and the Rye Barrel-Aged Brown Ale, all three aged in Clifton-based, Silk City Distillery’s barrels that were once used to distill rye whiskey and bourbon. In addition, to the barrel-aged series, Montclair Brewery plans to have its two leading IPAs- National Emergency a New England style IPA and its Poor Richard’s American style IPA, on tap along with a new rosemary IPA – Kamacitra, brewed with rosemary harvested from City Green Farms in nearby Clifton and citra hops. In all a minimum of 18 beers will be flowing all weekend long.
As a culmination of the weekend celebration, for the very first time, the brewery is planning on selling a limited amount of 16 oz packaged cans of four styles. The four styles will be announced on Friday and available for sale all weekend long, while supplies last.
In addition to the craft beer offerings, the three-day celebration will host a cadre of local artists. The Howlin’ Poets, a local Blues, Funk, Rock band will perform on Friday evening, 7:30 to 10 p.m. DJ Dan.CE and DJ Rafe will spin finger-snapping, hip-shaking tunes on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Edward Swanton, one-man band acoustic musician will help close out the weekend long festivities with soothing acoustics on Sunday 5 – 8 p.m.
