UPDATE: A second email was sent regarding Stairwell 12:

Dear MHS Parents/Guardians,

I am sending you the following update with regard to Stairwell 12. UPDATE
Today the architectural and engineering firm assessed the area and shared that the detachment of the terrazzo from the nosing of an individual stair was deemed to not have any structural damage. The detachment of the terrazzo was cosmetic damage that posed a tripping hazard. The area will reopen tomorrow with access from the ground floor to the first floor. Access from the first floor to the second floor will remain closed while the area is being repaired.

Sincerely,

Anthony M. Grosso Principal

Montclair High School parents received an email from Principal Grosso regarding Stairwell 12:

Dear MHS Parents/Guardians,

Today one of the stairs in Stairwell 12 (by the Amphitheater) was identified by MHS Security Personnel as having a detachment of the terrazzo from the nosing of an individual stair. At the time of the identification, security was positioned to secure the access to Stairwell 12 for the safety of all students and staff. District administration from Buildings and Grounds and the Business Office were called to assess the area. District architects and the Montclair Fire Department have been contacted to review and provide the next steps moving forward. The Montclair Police Department, Head of MHS Security, District and MHS administration collaborated to provide rerouting of egress patterns in the event of an evacuation.

We will provide an update from the architect as information is provided to District and MHS administration. Moving forward, Stairwell 12 will not be accessed until further notice. Please contact me at 973-509-4069 if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Anthony M. Grosso Principal
