Name: Georgette Gilmore
Where do you live? Montclair, near Edgemont Park.
When did you move there? My husband and I moved to Montclair when we were married 17 years ago.
Where did you grow up? Jersey City, before it was “hip.”
How do you make a living? I recently joined the Marketing Department as the Creative Writer & Social Media Manager at the Montclair Art Museum. MAM was one of the first places I visited in Montclair, way before I moved here in 2002, so working there now feels perfect. It is perfect.
Before this position, I was the Communications Director & Program Coordinator for Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence (MFEE). In the past, I worked as an editor, writer, and social media manager for various digital media sites, like Baristanet (shout out!), Barista Kids before that, Cool Mom Picks, and various other parenting websites. But my first career was as a teacher.
Coffee, tea or …? Coffee is my everything. My addiction started as a child when my dad would make me a cup of Sanka before bed. However, I’ll never turn down a cup of Chai.
What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? It depends on my mood. There are two options:
- Staying in PJs, reading a book from MPL or Watchung Booksellers, binge-watching a show (usually something British), cooking a delicious meal, taking a hot bath, and getting back into bed before 10pm.
- Enjoying a day out with my family or friends at a museum, a film, or sightseeing and then ending the night with a fabulous meal and a deliciously strong cocktail…or two.
What’s your favorite local restaurant? Impossible to choose in Montclair, but lately I’m loving Faubourg, Cafe Giotto, Diesel and Duke, and Ruthie’s for a family meal. I also love Little Daisy Bake Shop for its delicious treats and because it’s peanut- and nut-free giving my older daughter with a food allergy a safe place for sweets.
What’s on your nightstand? A lavender eye pillow, Aveda Stress Relief oil, a reading lamp, and books.
What are you listening to? It changes depending on my mood, but currently it’s Colin Hay, Crowded House, Lizzo, Regina Spektor, Stevie Wonder, The Cure, The Beatles (my teenager is obsessed), Jamiroquai (Another teen favorite lately), Billie Eilish (my tween is obsessed), and I don’t go a day without a little Sinatra. He soothes my soul.
What are your current indulgences? Tequila, Haagen Daz ice cream, and anything my daughter bakes on the weekends.
What talent you would most like to have? To be an amazing singer and musician.
What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about Montclair? We’re not in a popularity contest with Brooklyn. We’re perfectly happy to be a New Jersey suburb that has fabulous restaurants, an amazing art museum, the best independent bookstore, a film festival, and a diverse community of talented musicians, writers, artists, and really creative & cool people.
What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? No funeral for me. I want my loved ones to gather together to remember that I loved my family and friends fiercely, raise a glass (or two) to my memory, and dance. Lots of dancing.
