When you open the door at Empanada or Nada in Montclair, you are greeted by vibrant blue walls and a glass case brimming with rows and rows of empanadas. Splitting a 12 empanada combo ($36) with three other people for $36 let me sample lots of empanadas (they also have other combos: 24 for $68, 6 for $20, and two empanadas plus a drink for $7). We enjoyed all the empanadas, but the two standouts were the beef and the guava and cheese empanadas.
The beef empanada had a distinctly authentic flavor I had only tasted while in Latin America. The beef and cheese empanada was also good, since the cheese added a creamy richness. Also, both the buffalo chicken and the Philly cheesesteak tasted exactly as like their popular comfort food counterparts — with all the different flavors staying true even when mixed into a single empanada. Some empanada crusts were flakier than others, but that did not hinder my empanada experience.
On the sweeter side, the guava and cheese empanada was one of the best I’ve ever tasted, featuring a sweet cream cheese paired with a scrumptious, gooey guava jam. I also tried a cafe con leche, which was good, even though it was more like leche con cafe.
The 2 empanadas plus a drink is perfect for lunch or an after school snack.

Definitely try the guava and cheese empanada!!
