Essex County Environmental Center (621-B Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland) will host Hot Chocolate Hike on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Families are invited for a hike around the Environmental Center forest, a winter campfire, hot cocoa and s’mores. Dress warmly. Advance registration and minimum number of participants required. Barnes & Noble Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host Storytime and Activities Featuring The Return of Thelma the Unicorn on Saturday at 11:00 AM. to share her horn and sparkles again, but with the help of her best friend Otis, she realizes the importance of spreading love and joy no matter what people think. Later, at 2:00 PM on Saturday, Barnes & Noble Clifton Commons will host Escape This Bookstore! Join in and explore the newest addition to the exciting Escape This Bookstore! series. Decide your destiny by solving puzzles and riddles to pass each challenge and get to the next adventure! For ages 8-12.
On Saturday morning, enjoy Winter Birds Hike at Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area (472 Boonton Avenue, Montville Twp) from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM for ages 10 and up. Learn about the hearty birds that live in New Jersey at this time of year. Gain experience recognizing these winter residents by sight and sound. Bring your binoculars or borrow a pair from the hike organizers. This event is free, but preregistration is required by calling 973-334-3130.
The Newark Museum of Art (49 Washington Street, Newark) will host Creative Play on Saturday beginning at 10:00 AM. Three- to five-year-olds and their caregivers can explore the Museum’s art and science collections through storytelling, song, playful activities and an art-making project. January’s theme is Seasons, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring, OH MY! Children will be introduced to seasons and explore the beauty of all the seasons represented in the Museum’s collection of art. Register online or by calling. Also on Saturday, there will be a MakerSPACE Drop-in from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM for ages 6-12. Full STEAM Ahead! Children will be introduced to the different elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics through activities that push their creativity and critical thinking.
The Newark Museum of Art will also host several activities weekly on Saturday and Sundays, from 11:00 PM to 2:00 PM:
- Family Drop-Ins – January’s theme is Self-Care. Explore ways to nourish yourself and your loved ones.
- Imagination Station – Spark your creativity while thinking outside the box. Have fun while achieving the challenge.
- Family Back Pack – A fun self-guided tour for the entire family! Utilize a spy glass, a timer and more, as well as prompts as your family interacts with great works of art to explore Community / Animals / People / Places!

Just Kidding at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway at 95th Street, NYC) will present Jungle Book on Saturday at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. This new theatrical adaptation of the works of Rudyard Kipling re-imagines his classic stories through modern eyes, transporting us to the urban jungle to relive Mowgli’s childhood in the jungles of India with Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther, and more. Cost is $14 for members and $17 for non-members.
ARTeVINO Studio (51 Upper Montclair Plz, Montclair) will host Pets at Sunset – Family Paint on Sunday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM for both adults and children aged 6 and up. Cost is $25 per person.
Shooting Star Dance Center (403 Broad Street, Bloomfield) will host Drop In and Dance on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM. Using songs and large and small props, it’s a 45-minute dance adventure not to be missed. Children will get the chance to explore their creativity and even pick up a step or two. This program is designed and best for age 2 to 5 years. Cost is $12 for one child and $20 for two children. Register online.
New Jersey School of Dramatic Arts (593 Bloomfield Avenue, Bloomfield) will host free sample classes and an open house on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Meet the instructors, visit the acting studios and theater and try as many classes as you want. No registration is needed. A full schedule of classes is available online and classes are available for kids in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Morris Museum (6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown) will host Teddy Bear Tea at 1:00 PM on Saturday. Enjoy a respite from the colder weather with scrumptious treats and a fun performance in the Bickford Theatre. Each child will receive a remembrance of the day. Perfect for families with children ages 3-8, this event offers a great opportunity for a winter-themed family photo. Tickets are $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
Mayers Consulting will present an All-Ages Music Showcase at DROM (85 Avenue A, NYC) on Saturday from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Experience 7 fantastic acts including Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats, Billy Kelly, Gustafer Yellowgold, Michael and the Rockness Monsters, Josh Lovelace, Lard Dog & The Band of Shy, and Falu’s Bazaar. Tickets are $10, but if you buy them online in advance and use promo code FAMILY, you can save $5.
Central Presbyterian Church of Montclair (46 Park Street, Montclair) will host Second Saturdays at Central on Saturday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Enjoy music and stories from the Wild Wild West as Richard Stillman, storyteller, uses music, tap dance, and lots of fun instruments to entertain! Open gym following the event.
On Saturday evening, Mayo Performing Arts Center (100 South Street, Morristown) will present Reza: Edge of Illusion at 7:00 PM. Reza takes the art of illusion to new extremes, delivering incredible cutting-edge magic, masterful comedic timing, and interactive and inspirational moments in a rock concert-style show that appeals to magic fans young and old. Tickets are $19-$39.
Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 East Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp) will host Family Photo Scavenger Hunt on Saturday and Sunday. Participate any time between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM. Bring your camera or phone for this month’s hunt, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Take a photo of every item and receive a prize. Cost is $10 per family.
Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) will host their Drop-In Studio on Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Get creative in the Drop-In Studio! Each week features a new art-making activity and gallery talk inspired by current exhibitions. Reservations not required and visitors of all ages are welcome! This week, make an Animal Spirit Totem Stone inspired by MAM’s collection of Native American art and artifacts. This event is free for members and included with Museum admission for non-members.
On Sunday, Verona Public Library (17 Gould Street, Verona) will host Kids Yoga from 2:30 PM to 3:15 PM with Certified Instructor Jaime Capra of Pretzel Kids Yoga. The program incorporates traditional yoga postures with imaginative yoga games and relaxation techniques. All told, children laugh, learn, exercise, breathe and relax. This 45-minute class is ideal for kids in grades 3-5. Please bring your own yoga mat or towel.
