MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair photographer Michael Stahl is known for his black and white portraits. Now, with everyone staying safe at home and practicing social distancing, Stahl invited families on his Portraits by Michael Stahl Facebook page to take him up on an offer for a drive-by portrait (he provided families a free digital copy of their portrait).
Stahl broke out his telephoto lens; families sat or stood on their front porch, yard or steps (and in one case, behind a window).
The experience was interesting for both Stahl and the families.
“Everyone was had a good time at these very mini sessions — about five minutes each,” Stahl says. He visited (safely at 20 feet away) with families in Montclair, Glen Ridge and Bloomfield.
“I think everyone had fun,” he says, “even the teenagers that had to be cajoled into participating.”
The challenge for Stahl is he normally can work with families up close to help with posing and other details.
Stahl hopes to be able to open his studio soon and will be creating special offers to kick things off again once these days of social distancing are behind us.
