Baristanet Profile: Meridith Manlowe

Name: Meridith Manlowe

Where do you live? I live in Upper Montclair.

When did you move there? We moved here from Cedar Grove 14 years ago.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Exton, Pennsylvania.

How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion? I run a small non-profit Cat and Kitten rescue called Sammyvale Animal Sanctuary. I started in animal reacue when I was 23 as a volunteer at the Teterboro Animal Shelter. I was way too emotional to be in that setting. I cried every day to the point where they asked me to stop volunteering. I started volunteering with a foster/rescue group called Orphaned Pets. I was hooked and have been fostering every since. Right now Sammyvale Animal Sanctuary takes in orphaned animals from the streets of Paterson, Newark and the Oranges. We get the babies healthy and socialized. It’s a passion I share with my daughter, Ainsley, who is very much involved in our rescue. She will be a freshman at Bucknell University in the fall studying Animal Behavior Science. Guess it’s in the blood.

Coffee, tea or … ? I am a coffee person. Dark Roast with French Vanilla Coffee Mate – no more than 2 cups in the morning.

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? My perfect weekend would include, cuddling kittens, jigsaw puzzles with my daughter and movies with the whole family.

What’s your favorite local restaurant? My fave restaurant is Dai Kichi, my favorite is the Popeye Roll. I love the peanut topping. And of course chatting with Aki is always fun too. For special occasions, Cafe Matisse in Rutherford.

What’s on your nightstand? My nightstand has tissues for seasonal allergies, cherry chap stick, and some eucalyptus hand cream.

What are you listening to? Right now I’m listening to a lot of show tunes. I like Les Miserables and Wicked.

What are your current indulgences? Current indulgences include Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs (Easter time of year) and lots of Take Out Dinners.

What talent you would most like to have? The talent I would like to have most would be that of multitasking. Ask anyone in my family and they will tell you I am extremely challenged that area.

What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about Montclair? The worst kept secret about Montclair must be our amazing restaurants since is near impossible to get reservations on a Saturday night.

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? I hope they say that I was a kind and generous person.
