They’ve missed senior prom, awards night and other once-in-a-lifetime events that make senior year special. What can you do for the Class of 2020 to boost the spirits of seniors who have had to give up a lot?

Communities all around the country are stepping up, showing the Class of 2020 a little love and letting them know they are not forgotten. Bloomfield residents stepped up on the Celebrate Bloomfield High School Seniors group, adopting more than 200 seniors, sending good wishes along with surprises and messages of encouragement.

Tina Otto Cochran started the Celebrate Bloomfield High School Seniors page; the page has grown to 600+ members.

Cochran had heard of the idea and saw pages that were statewide, but thought it would be cool to make it local. Her own daughter is in the Class of 2020 and encouraged her to do it.

Cochran says the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Seniors (or senior parents) post their picture and share a little bit about their high school experience as well as their interests and favorite things. Then, community members can comment to adopt a senior. Once they pair up with a senior, they get to decide what they want to do for the graduate — and people have done some pretty amazing and memorable things.

“I was shocked at the generosity adults have shown to these high school seniors,” says Cochran, adding that there a lot of business people in town, as well as teachers, who have known the kids from when they were in elementary school.

Cochran says gift cards, along with favorite candy and snacks have been popular gifts to give.

“One gift that sticks out was Sal from Bella Napoli who gave the senior he adopted a huge heart covered in money and gift cards,” Cochran says.

Others have given college swag to the student’s chosen college or university. The seniors have posted thank you messages in the group, sharing how much they loved being adopted.

Adopt a senior has been a morale booster not just for seniors but for community members who feel good making someone’s day — and connecting with others in a time where we are together apart.
