Governor Murphy announced that restaurants, bars, and other food establishments may begin serving in an outdoor setting on June 15 and local restaurants are getting ready for in-person service.
For establishments that have had outdoor dining areas, it means rearranging things to comply with guidelines. For others, who have not had outdoor service in the past but want to get back to business in some form, it means applying for a cafe license through the Township.
That’s what Ryan DePersio, owner and chef of Fascino, has done. For the first time since opening its doors on Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair 17 years ago, Fascino applied for a license and will have a sidewalk cafe.
“To be honest, I wish we did this years ago. We’re super excited to put seats outside and people are already calling to make reservations,” says DePersio, who adds, “I think this could be an addition for years to come.”
To comply with the guidelines, restaurants must, among other things:
- Place tables six feet apart from each other
- Limit tables to eight customers
- Require employees to wear face masks and gloves
- Place signs that say patrons with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19 shouldn’t enter.
- Close off self-service food or drink options such as buffets, salad bars, and drink stations.
Read the complete list of guidelines here.
Some are going beyond the protocols with other safety measures. Demetri Malki, owner of De Novo, will be using contactless menus for added safety measures.
Sharon Egan, owner of Egan & Sons Irish Pub, will require customers to wear masks when entering the building for restrooms.
Fitzgerald’s 1928 will do non-invasive temperature checks before seatings.
And Risa Magid Boyer, chef and owner of Vanillamore, will require guests to pay in advance when they make a timed reservation to minimize contact.
So make those reservations! Of course, if you’re still unsure about eating out at this time, restaurants will continue to offer take out and delivery.
Local restaurants with outdoor dining:
Montclair’s French brasserie will open its patio for lunch, snacks & drinks, and dinner service following guidelines, plus contactless menus and masks required to use restroom inside. Reservations for a table should be made in advance , however walk-ins will be accommodated based on table availability.

The restaurant that offers Sweet. Savory. Social. will offer al fresco brunch for Father’s Day weekend. Guests are required to make reservations and pay in advance.
Fascino will offer its “Italian Without Borders” cuisine outside in its new sidewalk cafe. Chef DePersio is creating an intimate outdoor cafe complete with trellises covered with vines and flowers. They will have 14 outdoor seats starting on June 17 and will offer a more casual menu, including the Chef’s famous RD burger available at his other establishments. (The Fascino version will have truffle cheddar cheese!). Fascino will also introduce a catering menu.

They are limiting the tables to 12, will have 3 servers and 2 “sanitizing specialists”, aka bus people on staff, and will require reservations in timed slots (3-5, 5:30 – 7:30 and 8 – closing). They will allow walk-ins, if space is available to the beer garden.
Montclair Diner has expanded table seating outside, with tables in front of the diner and opposite the mural in the walk through alley alongside the building.
Safety guidelines aren’t the only thing Montclair’s Brazilian restaurant is doing beginning on June 15. Samba is now a completely gluten-free restaurant, with all breads made on the premises. Tables for two will be available outside on a first come, first serve basis.
The corner Italian spot on Glenridge Ave. will open for full service outdoor dining on its patio. Reservations are required and will be offered in seating time slots.
