Montclair Girl Scouts Work to Bring Fun To Families Who Visit Toni’s Kitchen

A troop of four 8th grade Girl Scouts – a small but mighty troop together since the first grade – are working on their Silver Award. Thinking about what the Montclair community needed, the group decided to provide, fundraise for, create, and distribute “activity bags” for families with younger elementary-aged children to pick up along with food from Toni’s Kitchen. Toni’s Kitchen let the scouts know they have at least 50 families with younger kids picking up weekly, and the troop wanted to give kids a way to have fun and stay active, especially during the pandemic.

Troop members Nicole, Reed, Sammy, and Willa created an around Montclair activity list of free or low-cost that families can discover together, and added activities into the bags like books, coloring pages, colored pencils, sidewalk chalk, toy cars, balloons, treasure coins, and much more.

So far, the girls have raised about $650 of their $750 goal and have made and delivered about 40 bags to Toni’s Kitchen. Donations have come from generous community members who agreed to sponsor a $15 box.

The girls were thrilled to learn that the bags are a big hit and they would like to keep providing more activity bags throughout the fall. Additionally, the scouts are sewing child-sized, soft and breathable masks for Toni’s patrons.

The troop also have another idea in the works — putting together “birthday boxes” with cake mix, frosting, a small gift or book and party supplies to families in need.

Anyone interested in sponsoring an activity bag or supporting the troop’s other efforts, can email or Venmo donations to @MontclairGS.
