Verona High School Football Players, Coaches Asked To Quarantine After COVID-19 Exposure

Verona High School football players and coaches have been asked to quarantine by Montclair Department of Health, according to Dr. Rui Dionisio, Superintendent of Schools for Verona Public School District, who emailed parents Thursday.

Dionisio writes:

The Montclair Department of Health has been working cooperatively with the Verona Public School District regarding a positive result of COVID-19 at Verona High School. After careful consideration of the circumstances, the Montclair Department of Health has provided the school with a “recommendation that all student athletes participating in the high school football program quarantine for 14 days from last exposure to the positive case” (November 17 through December 1).

Additionally, all football coaches will be asked to quarantine and adhere to the Montclair Department of Health’s recommendations. Students asked to quarantine may resume in-person learning and school activities on December 2, 2020. All football practices and games are canceled and will not be rescheduled as the quarantine period extends beyond the last possible scheduling date of November 29, 2020 established by the NJSIAA.

The Montclair Department of Health has explained to the Verona Public School District that the school’s safety procedures, which requires 6 feet of social distancing and mask wearing of all individuals during the in-person instructional day, will allow Verona High School to resume in-person learning starting tomorrow, November 20, 2020. This recommendation was made after having conversations with specific individuals regarding the compliance of all students and staff regarding district safety procedures. Students in Cohort A, may return to in-person learning tomorrow for periods 5-8 unless the student is a member of the football team who is required to quarantine.

The District continues to follow the guidelines from the CDC and the State of New Jersey in order to assure the health and safety of our community. All of our schools are cleaned and sanitized daily and an additional, robust cleaning occurred on November 19, 2020.
