Weekend Family Fun: Scavenger Hunts, Crafts, and Online Activities

Happy Thanksgiving weekend! Every year, but especially this one, it’s important to take time out of each day to acknowledge all we have to be grateful for. But it’s still the weekend and that means family fun! We’ve rounded up some things to do, you know, in between extra desserts and leftovers.

Now through the end of November, the Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 East Hanover Avenue, Morris Township) will host their Family Photo Scavenger Hunt from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM daily. Plants are the stars of the garden, no matter the season. The stars are out in this month’s Scavenger Hunt. Look for the stars and find the “stars” of the winter garden in this contactless family scavenger hunt. Find them all and win a prize. Registration online is required. Cost is $10 per family; up to 6 people.

Studio East Training for the Performing Arts based in Kirkland, WA, is streaming The Journey… now through December 6. “In this time of COVID 19 and widespread societal pain, anger, and sorrow, it is essential that we listen to the voice of each and every generation. Often the experience of teenagers and young adults is minimized and overlooked. The impact of this pandemic, and of systemic racial injustice, is far reaching and long-lasting.” 17 young artists ages 12 and older worked together online to share their experiences over recent months. Recommended for ages 9+. To view the show, make any donation you wish, even as little as $1.

Continuing through the rest of the year, Story Pirates will present Sleep Squad, a family-friendly, interactive, virtual theater experience that turns your home into a rocket ship to launch kids into their dreams. Featuring brand new, unique, kid-driven comedy and music from the Story Pirates that you can’t see or hear anywhere else, this world premiere on-demand production creates a new kind of bedtime ritual for kids age 4-12. A “Dreamtime Travel Kit” can be delivered to each ticket buyer’s home address as well. Visit the website for additional details and dates. Tickets start at $35 for the program, plus $15 for a kit. Through 11/30, use code TURKEYDREAMS at checkout to get the program only (no Dreamtime Travel Kit) for only $19. The ticket holders may stream the show unlimited times for a 10-day period.

This Paper Plate Owl craft is irresistibly cute and easy for all ages. It utilizes items you likely have around the house or are easy to acquire. It calls for paint, but if you’re not into that, crayons or markers would work just as well. You could also attach the wings with fasteners rather than glue to make the wings movable!

To round out November and keep the thankfulness theme going just a little longer, checkout this Gratitude Scavenger Hunt. This is great reminder for kids (and adult, too!) of all the small things we can appreciate in our lives. You can choose to take pictures, make a collage, or simply write a list. This list includes topics that can fit just about any family, age, or culture.
