Where do you live? Montclair, NJ
Where did you grow up? Newark, NJ
How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion?I work as a Social Worker in the Paterson Public School District. I actively participate in two community organizations: the Montclair branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) where Albert Pelham is the president and New Jersey Association of Black Educators (NJABE) where James Harris is president.
Right now, I am very passionate about a local business that has been significantly impacted by the COVID pandemic. My friend and hairstylist, Nicole Ewell, owns Cleo’s Hair Studio on Midland Avenue in Montclair (previously Revelations on Bloomfield Avenue). The studio was previously owned by Nicole’s aunt, and Nicole, her aunt, and Nicole’s mother worked at the salon together for years. Sadly, COVID took the lives of both Nicole’s aunt and mother, and now she has taken on the challenge to keep the salon open. Please take time to read her story. And if you can help or know someone or a company sponsor that can help, please donate.
Coffee, tea or … ? My favorite warm drink is a cup of Earl Grey tea with just the right amount of sweet cream.
What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? The first thing that makes a weekend perfect is when it is an extended weekend (no work on Friday and Monday). Activities to include: rest, my daughter’s soccer game, shopping, rest, pampering (hair and nails), movie, a video call from my daughter in college, and did I mention, rest!
What’s your favorite local restaurant? My favorite local restaurant would undoubtedly be Mesob on Bloomfield Avenue. My favorite dish is Minchet Abish Alicah (chopped prime beef in Ethiopian clarified butter simmered in a mild sauce). My choice of sides would be Gomen (collards) and Dinish Wet (potatoes).
What’s on your nightstand? My favorite nighttime activities always sit on my nightstand for easy access. The current book I am reading (This is My America), my unhealthy nighttime indulgence (Snickers with almonds), and a journal and pen.
What are you listening to? I enjoy listening to the Actin’ Up Podcast co-hosted by my childhood friend and actor, Malik Barnhardt. On this show you will experience real and raw conversations with a variety of famous actors, comedians, models, directors, producers, and industry insiders.
What are your current indulgences? Binge watching Netflix is my quarantine activity. Some shows I would recommend include: Grand Army, Queen’s Gambit, All American, Greenleaf, Schitt’s Creek, How to Get Away with Murder, and The Kalief Browder Story.
What talent you would most like to have? I have always wanted to be a fashion designer. However, I don’t know how to draw. Later in life I realized there were other careers I could have pursued in the fashion industry. Who knows? Once I retire from my current career, I may take that opportunity to enter the dynamic industry of fashion!
What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about Montclair? My daughter has told me about what I can imagine is the best-kept secret in Montclair. I have not experienced it myself. She told me there is a walking trail somewhere off of Park Street. One day I am going to ask her to show me this trail.
What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? When my friends and family look back over my life, I hope they will reflect on how selflessly I gave my all to my children.
