Bloomfield, NJ – Toni’s Community Closet, a thrift shop project of Toni’s Kitchen, is marking its six-month anniversary this month. The accomplishment of launching a new initiative despite the obstacles of the pandemic make this milestone especially meaningful.
Over the next six weeks, The Closet will celebrate the anniversary with bonus sales on featured items of its already low-cost offerings which include children’s and adults’ apparel (including designer-wear), kitchen and housewares, home décor, toys and children’s books, accessories, and more. All items – brand new or gently used – are donated by Toni’s Kitchen’s generous supporters in the community.
Toni’s Kitchen, a food ministry of St. Luke’s Church in Montclair, started Toni’s Community Closet after noticing the need for quality clothing among populations served by the food ministry. The Closet was founded to give the community a place to shop for high quality, low-cost goods and rally behind sustainability and reusing goods. “The shop appeals to a wide range of clientele,” said Closet Co-Manager, Carol Costello. “Families on a budget, vintage and treasure hunters, students and young adults, and people who just love a bargain.”
Toni’s Closet was scheduled to open just as Covid-19 shut down the business community in March 2020. Disappointed but not deterred, a team of volunteers was able to open The Closet in July at 23 Broad St., in the heart of Bloomfield, adding to the city’s downtown revitalization.
In the months since, the thrift shop has thrived with a solid base of regular customers and thrift shop aficionados. “Our customers love the feel of the shop and come back regularly to check on the updated offerings,” marveled Beverly D’Andrea who also oversees the Closet, along with Jane O’Leary, Ellen Blankfein, and Jessica Michaud. Some special items are also offered on the Closet’s Facebook Marketplace and Instagram.
All proceeds above the cost of running Toni’s Community Closet are used to enhance Toni’s Kitchen food programs. To learn more about Toni’s Community Closet, visit Toni’s Kitchen website (www.toniskitchen.org) or follow The Closet on Instagram (@toniscommunity closet) and Facebook
