Name: Kristin Kaufman
Where do you live? Bloomfield, right around the corner from the Watchung Avenue intersection with Broad Street.
When did you move there? Just over 13 years ago.
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Massachusetts, on the South Shore in a town called Hull. It is a tiny beach town right across the harbor from Boston.
How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion? My everyday passion is finding beauty in the world. That has taken me to a few different places in my life and my career. Outside of work, this passion has led me to spend a lot of time with my church’s food pantry. What is more beautiful than watching this community step up to support their neighbors!
In my career, I found great satisfaction as a hair stylist both in Massachusetts and when I moved here. Eventually, my path wound a way to turn a hobby and personal retreat into a career, and today I am a florist. I fell in love with flowers in the same way that most people do – completely captivated by their intensity and range of colors, shapes, and smells. I have spent years in this pursuit in a way that I found very therapeutic, and very personal. Now I am able to share those feelings through my business – Florajoy – where I collaborate with clients to bring them individually curated arrangements.
Coffee, tea or … ? Morning and afternoon French Press and a cup of tea before bed!
What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? I drive my kids crazy, but my perfect weekend is the whole family (including the 2 dogs!) hiking. We love Ramapo Reservation and spend a lot of time on trails in the Poconos. Nature, exercise, and family!
What’s your favorite local restaurant? I have been absolutely addicted to Brookside Thai forever and am really loving Mr. Exquisito. I’m also right around the corner from Stamna and Agora – tough to beat.
What’s on your nightstand? A plant of course, my journal, my tea, and The Flower Recipe, by Alethea Harampolis and Jill Rizzo.
What are you listening to? All over the place right now: Meat Loaf and Justin Bieber are dominating the play list, with The Lumineers and Tracy Chapman mixing it up.
What are your current indulgences? Rx Almond Butter Vanilla on top of apples, bananas and strawberries. Ok, maybe a few chocolate chips on top…
What talent you would most like to have? I wish I could sing. Just to be clear, I sing. But I wish I could do it A LOT better.
What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about Bloomfield? Along the Third River in Bloomfield, right by Clarks Pond, in early April, you’ll see incredible blooming of the Fig Buttercup which is a beautiful yellow ground cover. If you are there at the right time when the sun is hitting it – truly breathtaking.
What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? She gave her all to the people in her life, and she tried to bring beauty into a world that continues to need it more and more every day.
