Weekend Family Fun: Fairs, Festivals, Movies and More

Another weekend is upon us! If you’re ready for some family-friendly fun, you’re in the right place! We’ve rounded up plenty of things to do in and around town. Check ’em out!

The Passaic County Fair will be held this weekend at Garret Mountain Reservation (8 Mountain Avenue, Woodland Park, NJ). The Fair will be open on Friday from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and then on Saturday and Sunday from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Enjoy rides, games, bounce houses, animals, music and performances, butterflies, and so much more. Visit the website for more details. Admission is free but parking is $5.

The New Jersey State Fair and Sussex County Farm and Horse Show will host its last day this Saturday at the Sussex County Fairground (37 Plains Road, Augusta). The event will feature live entertainment, horse shows, exhibits, carnival games, and rides. Food vendors will be on hand as well. A schedule of events is available on the website. Kick off the weekend with a viewing of Onward at Van Saun County Park (216 Forest Avenue, Paramus) on Friday evening. This free event begins at sunset or approximately 8:30 PM. The movie is rated PG. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets.

Stony Hill Farms (15 North Road, Chester) will host one additional weekend of its Sunflower Festival. Sunset in the Sunflowers will be held on Friday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Enjoy a beautiful setting photography, take a wagon ride to the cutting field to select some blooms to take home, then enjoy some homemade ice cream and fresh fruit. On Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the festival will feature a wagon ride into the fields, time for photos, live music, and vendors. Tickets for each day are $19.99-$42.99 with various options and add-ons.

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 East Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp) continues to host the Family Photo Scavenger Hunt. Held daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, bring your camera or phone for this month’s hunt. The current theme runs throughout August, which is “Throw Some Shade.” Travel from shady spot to shady spot and hunt for the clues to how trees survive the heat of summer.  Find all the items and win a prize. The cost is $10 per family or group of 6 or less. Preregistration is required.

Shooting Star Dance Center (403 Broad Street, Bloomfield) continues to offer Pop Up classes on Saturdays at 9:00 AM. This 30-minute class is for children ages 2-5. You must be preregistered. The cost is $10.

On Saturday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Turtle Back Zoo (560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange) will host Wonders of the Wild for ages 6 to 12. Turtle Back Zoo is an amazing classroom! The Wonders of the Wild program offers students an opportunity to participate in supplementary science and nature-themed programs and projects that facilitate scientific literacy and life-long environmental stewardship. The theme for August 14th is Colors. This is a drop-off program, and the cost is $30.

On Saturday, State Theatre New Jersey will host New Brunswick Heart Festival at 4:00 PM in downtown New Brunswick at Monument Square (2 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick). The free family-friendly event will be held in person and live streamed on YouTube. The festival, which celebrates all of the vibrant arts and history that New Brunswick and the County of Middlesex has to offer, will feature live performances, hard hat theater tours of State Theatre New Jersey in English and Spanish (see the latest renovations!, Japanese black ink drawing with the Highland Park Arts Commission, yoga with Sisterwork, fun giveaways from George Street Playhouse and American Repertory Ballet, and activity tent with Garden of Healing, and more! On Sunday, Montclair Jazz Fest will have an all-day block party at Lackawanna Plaza (downtown Montclair). From 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM, enjoy music and entertainment. From 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, there will be a Family Jazz Discovery Zone, a special place where kids and their families can gather to play, improvise, create, make new friends, and of course, share a passion for jazz! This weekend, Demarest Farms (244 Wierimus Road, Hillsdale) will host movie nights. On Friday, view Guardians of the Galaxy. On Saturday, catch Disney’s Zombie 2. Then, on Sunday, enjoy Wonder. All shows start at 8:30 PM. Tickets are $25 per car and must be purchased online.

Westfield Garden State Plaza (One Garden State Plaza, Paramus) will continue to host Dino Safari: A Drive Thru Adventure through September 4. It will be open from Wednesday to Sunday each week from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Tickets are $49.95 per car up to 7 occupants. Grab a prehistoric passport and join over 40 giant moving dinosaurs on a globetrotting expedition at Dino Safari, a completely drive-thru dino adventure for the whole family.
