Baristanet Profile: Shanna Polan

Name: Shanna Polan

Where do you live? Cedar Grove

When did you move there? August, 2011

Where did you grow up? East Brunswick, NJ

How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion? I am an elementary school Library Media Specialist by day and children’s book author by night! I’ve worked in Clifton’s Public Schools for 10 years and am publishing my first picture book, “Sammy the Sock”, in October. Check out my book launch on October 23rd at Cedar Bean’s in Cedar Grove! I absolutely love encouraging kids to read at work and am thrilled to introduce them to my own book soon!

Coffee, tea or … ? Coffee, but only frozen or iced with large amounts of sugar.

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? Waking up without an alarm clock, breakfast on the porch and a leisurely spur-of-the-moment road trip with my family where we follow whatever interesting signs we see.

What’s your favorite local restaurant? Cedar Bean’s Coffee Joint in Cedar Grove. It’s a great establishment with amazing staff. They support the local community, have such a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and, of course, make incredible drinks!

What’s on your nightstand? A few family photos, my water bottle, my kids’ water bottles, tissues, and a well-loved copy of The Book of Awesome by Neil Pasricha.

What are you listening to? A little Sesame Street, a little Pokemon Rap (basically whatever my 3 and 5 year old are currently enjoying) and Backstreet Boys…always Backstreet Boys!

What are your current indulgences? I really enjoy wearing fun, wacky mismatched socks! I don’t own one pair of plain white socks, so I’m always ready for Crazy Sock Day at my schools!

What talent would you most like to have? A decent sense of direction. Have you ever gotten lost 2 minutes from your home? Because I have…numerous times.

What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about your town?  We love going for walks on the West Essex Trail! It goes right through Cedar Grove and although it is well-known in the area, we didn’t give it a try until a few months ago. Our 3 year old kept asking us if we could go on the pedestrian bridge over Pompton Avenue, so we decided to go exploring one day and there it was!

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? Wow! She lived a really long time! And wrote so many fun books!
