Weekend Family Fun: Fall Activities, Farms, Firehouse and More

Happy weekend! Are you ready to have some family-friendly fun? We’ve gathered up some things to do in and around town. Check ’em out!

On Friday at 4:00 PM, Watchung Booksellers will present Storytime on the Green. Bring a blanket and enjoy a story and activity. Anne Appert’s Blob is a humorous picture book featuring a blog (n. a creature that can be anything they want) about embracing who we are and the many things we can be.

On Friday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Montclair History Center and Montclair Community Farms (108 Orange Road, Montclair) will host Friday on the Farm. Enjoy some fun on the farm! Bring your own blanket and beverages and enjoy live music from School of Rock, Ruthie’s BBQ & Pizza, River Valley Community Grains, lawn games, farm products, opportunities to meet our chickens and more. There will also be a Seed Saving Workshop/Seed Swap so bring your seeds!

Every weekend through November 7, Heaven Hill Farm will host their Great Pumpkin Festival from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy a variety of activities including a tractor hayride, mad scientist corn maze, obstacle course, animals and more. Admission starts at $19.99 per person. Other activities including carnival rides, paintball, sand art, and more are available for an additional fee.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, Field Station Dinosaurs (3 Overpeck Park Driveway, Leonia) will host Dinosaurs After Dark from 6:45 PM to 9:30 PM. A spooky, funny, and thrilling adventure for the whole family featuring a lantern lit tour of the park! But watch out! The trails are dark and there’s a hungry T-Rex lurking in the shadows. A fearless Dinosaur Wrangler will lead a Tyrannosaurus Hunt along the Field Station’s darkened trails with a stop at every dinosaur and a few surprises along the way. At the end of the night, everyone will gather around the campfire for a dinosaur sing-along, roasted marshmallows, and hot chocolate! Tickets are $24. Children under 2 are free.

On Friday and Saturday, West Hudson Arts & Theater Company will present Alicia: A bilingual adaptation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a whimsical journey “through the looking glass” with dialogue in Spanish and English. Performances of this family-friendly production will be on Friday at 7:30 PM and Saturday at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM, at East Newark Recreation Center (44 Central Avenue, East Newark). Tickets are $12-$15.

On Saturday at 10:15 AM, The Newark Museum of Art (49 Washington Street, Newark) will host Creative Play: Mini Zoo Edition! Enjoy a fun time with friends from Turtle Back Zoo. There will be a story time and a presentation of live animals. This program is free and designed specifically for children ages 3-5 and their caregivers. Register online.

Shooting Star Dance Center (403 Broad Street, Bloomfield) will host pop up dance classes on Saturdays at 9:00 AM. Dazzle, twirl, leap and play with one of our instructors as they lead your dancer through a 30-minute dance adventure. Pop up classes are a great way to check out the studio without committing to more than 30 minutes at a time. All pop-up classes are $10. You must register in advance.

Drop into Craft Saturdays at Dey Mansion (199 Totowa Road, Wayne) for a free parent and child art project. Craft demonstrations start at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. The event is open from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. New projects every week and all materials are included. The event will be held outdoors, weather permitting. RSVP online.

City Green Farm Eco-Center (171 Grove Street, Clifton) will host The Falling Leaves Workshop on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Why do leaves change color in the fall? Learn the answer to this question and celebrate the beauty of fall leaves with crafts, activities, and garden exploration. For kids ages 6-10. Parent(s) must accompany children to this program. This program is fully outdoors. Cost is $8. Register online.

On Saturday, enjoy Fall Farm Fun at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Road, Morristown). Timed entries will be offered at 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 1:30 PM, and 2:00 PM. Celebrate the fall season at Fosterfields! Navigate the corn maze and pick your own pumpkin in the brand-new pumpkin patch! Take an open-air wagon ride around the farm. Visit the farm and see corn grinding demos, butter churning, and all your favorite farm animals including the pigs, cows, sheep, goats, and chickens. All activities included with admission, which is $15 per person. Pre-registration is required online.

On Saturday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Play Theater of Scotch Plains is partnering with Team Car Wash (215 South Avenue East, Westfield) to present their first annual Haunted Car Wash. Choose from a silly or spooky experience. Carloads will engage with creepy costumed characters on the line, listen to seasonal music and Halloween-themed audio, and leave with a clean car and memories to last through Halloween. The cost for the event and the car wash is $20.

Liberty Hall Museum (1003 Morris Avenue, Union) will host Family Fun Day: The Firehouse from 1:00 PMM to 2:30 PM. Stewart Kean, one of the last permanent residents of Liberty Hall, began the collection as a child, which grew to include three restored fire engines! Enjoy a day exploring our firehouse with games and activities as we celebrate Fire Safety Month! Reservations are required. Tickets are $4-$10.

Turtle Back Zoo (560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange) will host Wonders of the Wild on Saturday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This program offers students ages 6-12 an opportunity to participate in supplementary science and nature-themed programs and projects that facilitate scientific literacy and life-long environmental stewardship. This week’s session is Predator vs Prey. Cost is $30 for this in-person, drop off program.

On Saturday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, The New Weis Center for Education, Arts & Recreation (150 Snake Den Road, Ringwood) will host Fall Fires: Nature Hike & Campfire for ages 6 and up. Experience the magic of this special season with a naturalist-led hike, followed by a campfire and s’mores. Cost is $8 per person. Tickets are available online.

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 East Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp) continues to host the Family Photo Scavenger Hunt. Held daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, bring your camera or phone for this month’s hunt. There’s a new theme every month and October’s theme is “Scarecrows in the Garden.” Can you use the clues to find all the scarecrows in this fun family photo scavenger hunt? Take a photo of each and win a prize. The cost is $10 per family or group of 6 or less. Preregistration is required.

On Sunday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Reeves-Reed Arboretum (165 Hobart Avenue, Summit) will host their Celebrate Fall Festival. Games, crafts, music, and of course goats…these are just a few of the activities that are part of the eagerly anticipated Celebrate Fall Festival! With Halloween right around the corner, families can explore our Spooky Trail or enjoy the golden autumn colors of our gardens, crisp weather, and some yummy fare from one of the vendors. A cultural Durga Puja program will feature Indian song and dance performances, fashion show, story time, and additional activities for children. The event will have staggered entry times and pre-registration is required. The cost is $10 per person for non-members.
