Weekend Family Fun: Film, Comedy, Magic, Celebrating Italy, and More

The weekend is here! Are you ready to do it up and have some family-friendly fun? We’ve rounded up some things to do to help you spend your time!

On Friday at 4:00 PM, Watchung Booksellers (54 Fairfield Street, Montclair) will present Storytime on the Green. Bring a blanket and enjoy a story and activity. Teach little ones that it’ okay to have a bad day in this brightly illustrated, gently affirmative picture book about keeping our heads up and letting things pass. Keep Your Head Up is the first picture book by Aliya King Neil.

THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES.

On Friday, Montclair Film brings you a free outdoor screen of The Mitchells vs. the Machines at Lackawanna Plaza. Venue open at 5 p.m. and the film begins at sundown. Registration is recommended.

Every weekend through November 7, Heaven Hill Farm will host their Great Pumpkin Festival from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy a variety of activities including a tractor hayride, mad scientist corn maze, obstacle course, animals and more. Admission starts at $19.99 per person. Other activities including carnival rides, paintball, sand art, and more are available for an additional fee.

On Friday and Saturday evenings through October 30th, Field Station Dinosaurs (3 Overpeck Park Driveway, Leonia) will host Dinosaurs After Dark from 6:45 PM to 9:30 PM. A spooky, funny, and thrilling adventure for the whole family featuring a lantern lit tour of the park! But watch out! The trails are dark and there’s a hungry T-Rex lurking in the shadows. A fearless Dinosaur Wrangler will lead a Tyrannosaurus Hunt along the Field Station’s darkened trails with a stop at every dinosaur and a few surprises along the way. At the end of the night, everyone will gather around the campfire for a dinosaur sing-along, roasted marshmallows, and hot chocolate! Tickets are $24. Children under 2 are free.

On Friday and Saturday for its final weekend, West Hudson Arts & Theater Company will present Alicia: A bilingual adaptation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a whimsical journey “through the looking glass” with dialogue in Spanish and English. Performances of this family-friendly production will be on Friday at 7:30 PM and Saturday at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM, at East Newark Recreation Center (44 Central Avenue, East Newark). Tickets are $12-$15.

On Saturday, Montclair Public Library (50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair) will host a number of activities.

  • 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM: Tarantella Dance Workshop. Learn the basic steps to the Tarantella. Registration is required for this all-ages event.
  • 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM: Kids’ Arts and Crafts…Italian Style! Take home or complete a fun Italian-themed craft in the Children’s Room. No registration is required.
  • 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM: Italian American Show. Learn about Montclair’s 100-year long connection with Sister City, Aquilonia, Italy, followed by a live performance featuring traditional, folk, and contemporary music and dance. Registration is required. This event will also be available virtually.

On Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Montclair Cooperative School (65 Chestnut Street, Montclair) will host their Forest Street Festival. This all-day block party for all ages will feature live music, arts and crafts, food, and free outdoor programs. Scheduled activities include performances by local musicians, specialty demonstrations by community members, family games, and more.

Shooting Star Dance Center (403 Broad Street, Bloomfield) will host pop up dance classes on Saturdays at 9:00 AM. Dazzle, twirl, leap and play with one of our instructors as they lead your dancer through a 30-minute dance adventure. Pop up classes are a great way to check out the studio without committing to more than 30 minutes at a time. All pop-up classes are $10. You must register in advance.

Drop into Craft Saturdays at Dey Mansion (199 Totowa Road, Wayne) for a free parent and child art project. Craft demonstrations start at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. The event is open from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. New projects every week and all materials are included. The event will be held outdoors, weather permitting. RSVP online.

On Saturday, enjoy the final day of Fall Farm Fun at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Road, Morristown). Timed entries will be offered at 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 1:30 PM, and 2:00 PM. Celebrate the fall season at Fosterfields! Navigate the corn maze and pick your own pumpkin in the brand-new pumpkin patch! Take an open-air wagon ride around the farm. Visit the farm and see corn grinding demos, butter churning, and all your favorite farm animals including the pigs, cows, sheep, goats, and chickens. All activities included with admission, which is $15 per person. Pre-registration is required online.

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 East Hanover Avenue, Morris Twp) continues to host the Family Photo Scavenger Hunt. Held daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, bring your camera or phone for this month’s hunt. There’s a new theme every month and October’s theme is “Scarecrows in the Garden.” Can you use the clues to find all the scarecrows in this fun family photo scavenger hunt? Take a photo of each and win a prize. The cost is $10 per family or group of 6 or less. Preregistration is required.

On Sunday, Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) will host Sunday Studio from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The installation By Our Own Hands is inspired by Tibetan Prayer Flags. In this Sunday Studio, participants will design personalized mixed-media flags combining watercolor paint and markers, printmaking stamps, text, and symbols that reflect their identities and the wishes they would like to spread out into the universe. They will also have the opportunity to use a sewing machine to apply lines and graphics, while learning about Tibetan Prayer Flags, and viewing our current exhibition by Frontline Arts. This event is free with museum admission and advance registration is required. It is intended for families with children ages 5-12, but all are welcome.

On Sunday at 3:00 PM, Bergen Performing Arts Center (30 N. Van Brunt Street, Englewood) will present David Caserta’s Haunted Illusions. Treat your family to an evening of mind-blowing magic and comedy that gets the whole audience into the act. Master illusionist David Caserta, who was featured on NBC’s, America’s Got Talent, has people levitate, disappear and reappear right before the audience’s eyes. Witness new illusions created just for this show. What better way to celebrate Halloween than with an incredible night of magic – at the Halloween spectacular Haunted Illusions! Tickets are $19-$39.

On Sunday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Maplewood – Division of Arts & Culture will present Diwali Fest NJ 2021 at Maplewood Memorial Park Amphitheater (580 Valley Street, Maplewood). Enjoy family fun with food, dance, music, and children’s activities. Admission is free, but vendors will be onsite. Bring a picnic blanket and chairs.

On Sunday, Kids ‘N Comedy will present their “Tricks and Treats” Halloween stand-up comedy show at 1:00 PM at Gotham Comedy Club (208 West 23rd Street, NYC). Maskne, pumpkin spice, mummy issues, oh my! Halloween is back this year with a vengeance. Join the hauntingly hilarious pro comedians at Kids ’N Comedy, a terrifying group of teenagers fresh out of quarantine and ready take a fresh stab at in person stand up. These funny kids will share their deepest, darkest, most hilarious fears and observations during the seasonal pro comedy show where they are dead set on making you laugh. Tickets are $18 and a one item minimum is required.
