Baristanet Profile: Colleen Martinez

Name: Colleen Martinez

Where do you live? Montclair

When did you move there: 1998

Where did you grow up?  Elizabeth, New Jersey.

How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion? I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S). My passion is helping children and families to overcome adversity and trauma, and to support schools and other institutions in meeting children’s educational and emotional needs in developmentally appropriate ways. I’m an advocate for wellness and learning through play. I also love helping students and professionals to learn about effectively working with children and families.  For work these days, I’m an Assistant Professor teaching undergraduate and graduate social work students. I also do a lot of volunteering. Currently I am on the board of trustees of the New Jersey Association for Infant Mental Health.

Coffee, tea or … ? An Iced Butterbroo from Paper Plane Coffee Co.

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? Sleeping in, and then Breakfast at Ray’s Luncheonette, browsing at the farmer’s market, and then strolling and having dinner on Church Street.  A bike ride around town, or a walk in Mills Reservation in between (I get lost too easily at Eagle Rock Reservation).

What’s your favorite local restaurant? For breakfast, Ray’s Luncheonette. For dinner, Mesob (I am so glad they are working on reopening after Ida). For dessert, Kreme and Krumbs ice cream (THRILLED that they are coming back to town soon).

What’s on your nightstand? Lavender Water spray from Dolly Moo, whatever I’m reading for my book club, which right now is The Exiles, by Christina Baker Kline, and an electric heating pad.

What are you listening to? I love Pandora radio. The top three stations on my account right now are Red Hot Chili Peppers Radio, Swing Radio, and Ultravox Radio. I also check in with the news on my commute, usually 1010 WINS and NPR/WNYC.

What are your current indulgences? A monthly massage at Empyrean Massage in Verona, my Pandora Radio subscription, and frequent visits to Paper Plane Coffee Co.

What talent you would most like to have? To write prolifically and confidently.

What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about Montclair? Montclair is a town with about 38,000 strong opinions.

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? She was a great mother, she cared deeply about children, and her work made a difference.
